Jacobs Mechanical Engineering Manager in Barrow, United Kingdom

The UK Nuclear area within Jacobs provide engineering design, construction, planning, support, survey, design-build, project management and/or program management for our Nuclear Industry clients. With more than fifty years of experience across the complete nuclear asset lifecycle, we support client delivery and the associated infrastructure requirements at every stage of a project.

As the demand for our services continues to grow, we are now looking to appoint an Mechanical Engineering Manager, to provide support for projects within the Site Redevelopment Programme (SRP) at Barrow-in-Furness. Barrow-in-Furness is home to one of the few shipyards in the world that builds nuclear submarines. The shipyard is currently building Astute-class submarines (97m in length) and is moving into its next generation of submarines, through the production of Dreadnought-class (154m in length) submarine. To provide the required capabilities to support the Dreadnought production, the site is undergoing redevelopment through the construction of new state of the art facilities and upgrading the existing facilities and buildings.

The Engineering Manager (EM) holds responsibility for all mechanical engineering aspects of a project. The EM has engineering “ownership” of a project and directs activities to optimise engineering solutions, delivered in accordance with a tailored LCM process and due process.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Supporting the Project Manager in the successful delivery of all mechanical engineering aspects of the project.

  • Determine the SRP Safety Led Design Gated Process and Engineering Lifecycle Maturity gates, with maturity targets aligned to the Project’s objectives and recorded in the appropriate project Engineering Management Plan, in accordance with the Engineering Strategy.

  • Liaise with the Nuclear Governance Manager to ensure that all requirements of the NFDA are met to ensure smooth progress of the project through due process.

  • Advise Project Manager on engineering risk. Devise a plan to mitigate this risk.

  • Implementing the design configuration and ensuring, via controlled and authorised change, that the design configuration is declared and maintained.

  • Develop design work scope and support the development of an agreed strategy and plan to deliver the engineering aspects of the project.

  • Developing and executing effective design strategies and plans in line with the overall project strategies and plans.

  • Delivering integrated and robust engineering solutions, designs, specifications and instructions and documentation that meet the safety, legal, quality and technical requirements in a timely and cost effective manner.

  • Ensure the conduct of Design Reviews at appropriate points during the Lifecycle and at least once every 12 months since the last Design Review.

  • Knowledge and understanding of processes involved in mechanical engineering management of complex multi-disciplinary projects, engineering planning and strategy; organisation and governance; personnel and professional matters

  • Experience of engineering in procurement, construction, commissioning phases

  • Experience of modern mechanical engineering management techniques within complex, multifunctional organisations

  • Experience of modern programming software

  • Experience in setting up Engineering project procedures and processes

  • An ability to develop and implementing design assurance plans
