Position Summary

This is an experienced engineer position working under the supervision of Piping Engineering Department Manager, with primary focus on Pipe Stress Analysis, and in addition, may function as a Lead Piping Engineer on various projects.

  • Perform, check and supervise pipe stress calculations.

  • Assist in identification of critical lines requiring pipe stress analysis, review line list to ensure adequate level of criticality is defined.

  • Shall have extensive experience in performing stress analysis and flexibility calculations for various systems such as: Fired Heater piping, Air cooler piping, turbine piping, pump piping, reciprocating pump/compressor piping, large storage tank piping, FRP piping, Jacketed piping, glass-lined piping, PSV piping, large diameter (36” 72”) piping, underground piping, high temperature (creep range) piping, low temperature cryogenic piping, etc.

  • Prepare calculations to address various issues such as slug flow, mixed phase flow, water hammer, cyclic service, Category M, differential settlement, wind, seismic, PSV thrust force, etc.

  • Perform calculations for spring supported equipment.

  • Select expansion joints when necessary and approved, determine movements, prepare requisitions, datasheets, and review related vendor drawings.

  • Select springs/struts/snubbers when necessary, determine movements/loads, prepare spring/strut/snubber schedule, requisitions, and review related vendor drawings.

  • Perform reinforcement evaluation at pipe supports and branch connections.

  • Perform simplified evaluation of vibration-related issues.

  • Select, design and evaluate pipe supports.

  • Ensure compliance with various ASME and API codes and standards.

  • Perform FEA evaluation for evaluation of stresses at nozzles, or for determining user calculated SIFs, using NozzlePro, FE/Pipe or other FEA software.

  • Review client technical specifications related to piping flexibility analysis, piping components, fabrication, testing, and NDE, etc. and ensure compliance with the same.

  • May serve as a Lead Piping Engineer for assigned projects.

  • Lead piping engineer is responsible for preparing and managing a schedule for piping engineering activities and deliverables, preparing estimates, preparing scope of services, preparing effort hour forecasts, monitoring changes on the project, preparing change orders, managing the piping engineering budget and schedule, provide progress reporting, provide quantity trends and monitor quantities, coordinate with various disciplines, participate in 3D model reviews.

  • Coordinate with Process and Mechanical disciplines to determine Process data and any special Process requirements or equipment operation modes.

  • Coordinate with Piping discipline to determine the stress analysis due dates to support isometric issue schedule.

  • Coordinate with Material control and Piping/Projects disciplines to determine need dates on site for various Piping Engineering owned items, based on construction work packages, to support timely delivery to field/shop.

  • Coordinate with Civil/Structural groups to ensure loads are being effectively communicated.

  • Coordinate with workshare offices to ensure piping engineering scope is fully understood, and to ensure quality / consistency for all deliverables

  • Provide guidance, supervision and mentorship to less experienced engineers.

  • Prepare technical presentations for the advancement of technical knowledge of the piping engineering group.

  • Ensure adherence to department work instructions and technical guidelines.

  • Assist in the development and upkeep of department work instructions and technical guidelines

  • Identify improvement opportunities in the department work flow.

  • Consult with department manager and other senior personnel on technical problems, staffing requirements, and schedule issues relating to project commitments

  • May require adjusted scheduled based on project needs, may also require working overtime.

  • Occasional travel to field / project sites / other offices may be required.

Qualifications

  • BS or MS in an engineering discipline required, Mechanical engineering is preferred

  • Candidate should be PE licensed, or be eligible for PE and working towards it.

  • 4-8 years of experience required, with at least 4 years in the Refinery, Petrochemical, and Oil & Gas Industry.

  • At least 4 years of experience in performing stress analysis and flexibility evaluations.

  • Must have a strong understanding of industry codes such as ASME B31.3, B31.1, B31.4, B31.8 and API standards.

  • Experience with large capital projects is preferred, in the role of piping lead engineer as well as pipe stress engineer.

  • Some knowledge of line list, piping material specifications, and piping specialty items is required.

  • Ability to execute and oversee assigned work, within project schedule and budgeted hours.

  • Able to provide simpler, practical solutions that fulfill Client as well as ASME/API, and other code/standard requirements.

  • Experience with Caesar II is required.

  • Experience with FEA tools such as Nozzle Pro, FE Pipe or others is preferred

  • Experience with SmartPlant Review is preferred.

  • Experience with viewing laser scan data using LFM, or similar tools, is preferred.

  • Familiarity or past experience using the Energy Institute method for LOF evaluation is preferred.

  • Good Microsoft office skills are required (Excel, Word, etc.).

  • Basic CAD (AutoCAD/Microstation) skills preferred.

  • Able to use charts and other manual analysis methods
