Jacobs is currently seeking a Systems Administrator for their Aberdeen, MD location.

Duties include:

  • Provide development and test laboratory operation and maintenance services of multi-domain computer environment consisting of VMs, Windows Servers and Red Hat Linux, storage appliances and network switches/hubs.

  • Scan and apply patches and updates to the Lab Environment’s servers.

  • Interact with users and evaluate vendor products.

  • Make recommendations to purchase hardware and software, coordinate installation and provide backup recovery.

  • Develop and monitor policies and standards for allocation related to the use of computing resources.

  • Ancillary duties may include setting up administrator and service accounts, maintaining system documentation, tuning system performance, installing system wide software and allocating mass storage space.


  • Two (2) years of college in a computer field and five (5) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience for a total of seven (7) years. Progressive relevant training and/or certification in appropriate discipline may be substituted for one (1) year of the education or experience requirement.

  • 3 years with a Bachelors, additional 4 years without a Bachelors

  • Use and/or application of principles, theories, and concepts related to systems administration

  • Knowledge of industry practices and standards

  • Demonstrates the skill and ability to perform professional tasks

  • Maintain smooth operation of multi-user computer systems, including coordination with network administrators

  • Red Hat Linux, CISCO, and Windows server Operating Systems.

  • Virtualization servers and zoning, ESXi

  • Knowledge of Storage Area Network (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS) technologies including storage appliances

  • Installing security patches

  • Experience providing system/network support to a large team

  • Basic knowledge of hardware and software architecture

  • Knowledge of basic security and intermediate security hardening procedures

  • Setting up administrator and service accounts, tuning system performance, installing system wide software and allocating mass storage space

  • Experience with creating and maintaining technical documentation using Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio)

Desired Requirements ( nice to have but not required ):

  • Develop solutions to a variety of problems of moderate scope and complexity

  • Work under only very general supervision. Work is reviewed for soundness of judgment and overall adequacy and accuracy

  • Contribute to the completion of organizational projects and goals. Errors in judgment or failure to achieve results would normally be detected in supervisory oversight

  • Use and/or application of principles, theories, and concepts. Knowledge of industry practices and standards

Essential Functions:

  • Physical Requirements:

  • Most work will be done at a desk or computer.

  • Lab work environment must be able to lift and install servers in racks, run cabling.

  • Work Environment:

  • Laboratory SCIF environment. The work environment is fast-paced and sometimes involves extreme deadline pressures. The nature of the work requires a high degree of teamwork and cooperation with other members of the staff as well as individuals across the Company and Customers.

  • Equipment & Machines:

  • General office equipment including PC/laptop, Fax, Copiers, Shredder, Printers, Telephone, and other miscellaneous office equipment.

  • Servers, Routers, Hubs, Cat-5/Fiber Cabling.

  • Attendance:

  • Attendance is critical at all times. Must be able to work a 40-hour workweek, normally Monday through Friday. However, times and days may vary depending on business requirements. Needs to be available to work overtime during critical peaks and be available to meet last minute requests for overtime should the situation occur.

  • Other Essential Functions:

  • Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

  • Must be able to interface with individuals at all levels of the organization both verbally and in writing. Must be well-organized with the ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously. Must work well under pressure to meet deadline requirements. Must be willing to travel as needed. Must take and pass a drug test and background check as well as a motor vehicle records check. Must be a US Citizen.
