About the opportunity:

Jacobs Decommissioning Projects Office is currently recruiting for a Lead Mechanical Designer with demonstrable experience in leading a Mechanical Design team

The Decommissioning Projects office has a reputation for safely delivering quality projects on time and on budget is well recognised in the clients we serve. We have proven expertise in managing complex projects, with a long-standing UK presence, and significant international presence and growth ambitions.

Responsibilities:

The Lead Mechanical Designer will be responsible for leading the Mechanical Design function within the Decommissioning Projects office. The lead mechanical designer will have overall responsibility for the quality and consistency of 3D models and mechanical drawings produced by the department in support of its projects. Duties will include:

  • Setting up standard local training packages and assessing and maintaining the SQEP of all staff into the team (including new starters) against 2d and 3d drawing/modelling requirements.

  • Leading the recruitment of Mechanical Designers into the Decom Projects team.

  • Ensuring DO checking is carried out to the highest standards within the team and in line with BS8888.

  • Providing guidance and mentoring to junior designers, including apprentices.

  • Understanding current and forecast resource demands in the department and will work with Project and Engineering managers to ensure appropriate resource is available.

  • Although this is a technical leadership role it will not require direct Line Management of staff.

In addition, the Lead mechanical designer will be expected to contribute to projects including:

  • Producing design studies and manufacturing designs for Jacobs projects.

  • Work within a multi-discipline design team and be responsible for undertaking the design of equipment as delegated by the Lead Engineer or Engineering Manager

  • Providing safety, constructability and maintainability reviews of mechanical design aspects

  • DO Checking of drawings

  • Carry out technical risk analysis on designs for CDM compliance and CE certification.

  • Input to design justification reports that demonstrate the design mitigates all technical risks identified.

  • Ensure Drawings and models provide a level of information (drawings, specifications, works instructions etc) that enable manufacturing to take place.

Work will either be undertaken individually or by managing a small team of designers reporting to the Lead Mechanical Engineer.

Essential:

  • Degree qualified or equivalent (eg HNC/HND with significant experience) in engineering discipline with extensive design experience.

  • Experience of working within a highly regulated industry, preferably within the nuclear industry.

  • Experience of Inventor / AutoCAD is essential ideally with administration experience of both.

  • The candidate will need to be able to communicate effectively with team members, operational management and with the Client.

  • Basic Clearance is required (will be obtained as part of the pre-joining process with Jacobs.)

  • Demonstrable experience of leading a mechanical Designer function

Desirable

  • Administration level of expertise in Autocad /Inventor / Vault

  • SC clearance
