About the opportunity

Jacobs’ Vehicle Solutions team is involved with projects for new vehicles, depots, vehicle maintenance, fleet modifications and design, for a wide range of clients in the UK and Ireland including vehicle owners, operators, installers, equipment suppliers and local and national government organisations. We are recruiting a vehicle engineer with experience of mechanical design of rail vehicles, to help us develop and deliver further opportunities in the UK and Ireland.

The role will require the candidate to do the following:

  • To work directly for, and with, the client on mechanical design work for upgrades to existing trains.

  • To be part of a team or lead on work packages as directed by the company in line with their relevant skills.

  • Carry out CAD design using Solid Edge for railway vehicle layouts, assemblies, installations and parts using 3D models and 2D drawings.

  • Work on CAD models and drawings in parallel with the rest of the Rolling Stock Design team.

  • View vehicles when needed, for example at project start, during the design process or during installation – this will usually be at locations in the UK or Ireland.

  • Work to the UK Rolling Stock Design Team processes.

  • Use their own design skills to create design solutions to meet project requirements, interfaces and space constraints.

  • To work independently on defined projects.

  • To be responsible for providing technical reports and data as required.

  • To ensure effective communication at all times.

  • To report to the Team Leader, Vehicle Development and Design

  • To work with a location of a mixture of the office in Birmingham and working from home – the split of office and home working can be agreed to suit the candidate while allowing for work needs

Here’s What You’ll Need:

The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate the following:

  • Experience of successful project delivery and technical responsibility in mechanical design on a range of projects for UK rail vehicles.

  • Be experienced with the design of the following on UK rail vehicles: steel and aluminium fabrications, interior trim, equipment installations

  • Ability to lead work packages for rail vehicle mechanical design tasks.

  • Ability to work as part of a team and work independently.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills.

  • Good analytical skills.

  • Willingness and ability to deliver projects to quality, budget and time.

  • Willingness to travel to meet the needs of projects.

Qualifications & Experience:

Essential:

  • Degree/HNC or relevant experience

  • Experience of UK rail vehicle mechanical design with a manufacturer, operator, vehicle owner, design organisation or consultant

  • Experience of 3D and 2D CAD design using Solid Edge

Preferred:

  • Ability to lead work packages across design projects or willingness to progress in that direction
