About the Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a Sustainability Consultant to join our multi-disciplinary built environment team, located our Birmingham office. We are looking for someone who is passionate about sustainability and wants to change the conventional thinking to drive better outcomes for our clients and wider society.

At Jacobs we understand that 80% of our 2050 built environment has already been constructed. We also recognise that each year, 20% of the UK CO2 emissions are generated by the UK residential sector. This is why Jacobs Birmingham Cities and Places team is playing a pivotal role in solving the issues in decarbonization of our existing homes. Having a continuing well-established local framework and expanding project portfolio, this role gives you the opportunity to strongly influence our clients and teams to create more sustainable outcomes over the longer term. This bedrock of work means we welcome applications from candidates with the right mind set that either have a strong track record or are looking to further develop their career to the next level. Whilst based within our Birmingham team, this role will need you to collaborate across our wider Europe Cities and Places team.

The core projects at present mainly involve working with a long term local framework partner within the west midlands consisting of a variety of projects including multi-residential high, medium and low rise infrastructure replacement projects, district heating upgrades and feasibilities and District heating energy centre replacement designs. Outside of this core requirement we have projects including education based projects including new build schools and student accommodation both design and technical adviser roles, supporting our Aviation, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Defence, Highways, Water, Gas and Rail teams throughout the UK and internationally on various schemes.

Through a collaborative environment this role will require you to:

  • Provide guidance/advice in the field of low energy and sustainability design in the built environment, to our clients and internal multidisciplinary teams. You will deliver your guidance the form of workshops and presentations to both Clients, internal and external stakeholders.

  • Communicate ideas from you and the project by liaising with them to facilitate the integration of sustainability measures. Once being incorporated into the design, you will be self-motivated to produce sustainability reports, including information required for planning such as energy statements etc.

  • Have knowledge in the field of “Building Physics” and design for performance so that you can use Modelling software such as IES, TAS, Honeybee, Climate Studio or similar. Be able to translate the virtual environment into practical physical solutions. This will involve attendance at site to ensure solutions are deliverable.

  • Understand UK compliance landscape to provide advice on UK compliance such as Building Regulations Part L, so that you can undertake brukl reports, SAP assessments and EPC Lodging. Be able to undertake modelling and examination to write reports for CIBSE TM52, 54 & 59 and similar.

  • Develop yourself and your Jacobs multidisciplinary team colleague’s knowledge in the field of low energy and sustainable design. You will support the team directors in identifying training and development needs to upskill and mentor your colleagues.

Whilst not essential, preferably candidates will be able to

  • Provide additional advice on Net Zero Carbon Buildings, Design for Performance, Circular Economy, Regenerative Design, Wellbeing, and climate adaptation.

  • Undertake data analytics to provide best outcomes for our clients.

  • Be a positive voice in Jacobs and guide external seminars to promote Jacobs in the field of sustainability.

Should successful candidates not have these skills Jacobs will provide training/opportunities to upskill in these areas.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Have a system thinking approach to sustainability. Whilst compliance and understanding how to achieve planning for our clients is the norm, it is essential that you are passionate about sustainability in driving better outcomes for our clients and society. We encourage you to have an inquisitive mind with a desire to explore innovative ideas.

  • Be able to act as the sustainability consultant. You will have performed this role for consultants or contractors in the Building Services Industry before. In doing so you will have a good working knowledge on both current and emerging sustainability legislation and working practices, including Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), BREEAM etc.

  • Have excellent communication skills from good report writing, visual presentation and verbal communication, you will be able to convey often complicated concepts in a way that is both engaging and understandable to our clients and wider Jacobs team.

  • Be technology savvy. You will need to have experience in the field of Building Physics, using either IES or TAS you will already be applying your knowledge to the Building Services design environment. Additionally, you will have proven data analysis skills e.g., spreadsheet and power BI to model system performance data.

  • Be appropriately qualified. You will be Qualified to Degree Standard in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience and knowledge. It is essential that you will either be or working towards professional registration, including Incorporated (IEng) Chartership (CEng or CEnv) with CIBSE, IMechE, IEMA or equivalent. To perform your day-to-day tasks, you will have appropriate accreditation for lodging both domestic and no domestic EPC’s.
