Jacobs Systems Engineer in Birmingham, United Kingdom

Systems Engineer

Description

Jacobs is one of the world’s largest and most diverse providers of full-spectrum technical, professional and consultancy services for industrial, commercial and government organisations globally.

With more than 77,000 people globally, our teams collaborate, innovate and create. Our people are proud to have been behind some of the greatest consultancy and engineering feats over the past 70 years.

We foster a collaborative and inclusive environment for our people, and our partners, and we want you to be a part of our growing business.

We encourage applications from candidates looking for flexible working or reduced hours’ contracts.

Our Rail Group is growing and due to recent project wins and an increased demand from our clients for Systems Engineering, we are looking to expand our Systems Engineering group. We are now actively seeking Systems Engineers to join our dynamic and innovative team to support the delivery of projects within our Rail Group in Manchester. Our Systems Engineering Group is passionate about the challenging questions that we face. We are solution driven and reach beyond the normal to ensure that the work we undertake will leave a lasting legacy within the railway sector.

As a Systems Engineer you will be focused on delivering systems engineering activities across major rail projects within the UK (there are international opportunities also available). You will be a creative systems thinker who understands the application of systems engineering and a project lifecycle. You will be able to interpret working standards, such as IEC 15288, and apply them to complex problems. We’re not looking for someone with knowledge of the rail sector, we are looking for systems thinkers who can see the bigger picture and solve the problems that come with it.

As a Systems Engineer, you could be working under the direction of Senior and/or Principal Systems Engineers or you could be working as part of a wider project team with an expectation that you will deliver outstanding solutions and outcomes to our clients. You will also work closely with our clients to apply, where applicable, digital solutions and outcomes; leveraging the expertise of our Strategic Consulting and Digital Solutions business.

Ideally, you will be an early career professional with a collaborative mindset with a passion to leave a legacy on projects you are assigned to. You will be expected to be proactive in the development of our systems engineering products, tools and techniques as well as supporting marketing and bids. You will also be resilient and capable of presenting your ideas and/or solutions to different audiences as well as being confident to challenge the norm.

A typical project would include the following activities:

  • Supporting a major UK rail project with systems engineering activities

  • Where applicable supporting the Senior/Principal Systems Engineer in driving consultancy within the clients project and wider organisation

  • Supporting the implementation of the systems engineering activities and where applicable identifying, planning and scoping new activities with the client

  • Supporting the Sales Operation with bids

Qualifications

Essential:

  • A relevant degree in engineering or management (e.g. BEng/MEng/MBA)

  • Working towards Chartered status with a professional body (e.g. CEng)

  • Post degree experience in delivering systems engineering within the railway environment or a similar regulated environment (e.g. nuclear, aviation)

Desirable:

  • Requirements capture, analysis and management

  • Verification and validation

  • Interface identification, control and management

  • Systems architecture development

  • Experience in client facing roles
