Position Summary:

Successful candidate will be working in a dynamic office environment and needs to have experience in mentoring and building highly effective performance teams. In the absence of the Chief Mechanical Engineer, the Mechanical Engineering Supervisor shall carry out all the responsibilities of the Chief Mechanical Engineer. In addition to that, the Mechanical Engineering Supervisor shall assume the normal project duties of a Principal or Senior Engineer when assigned to a specific project.


  • Organizing and maintaining departmental engineering design guides.

  • Ensuring compliance with departmental engineering standards and work instructions.

  • Advising the mechanical engineering staff in solving complex problems arising in different projects.

  • Technical orientation of new mechanical engineering staff.

  • Assisting the Chief Mechanical Engineer in preparing studies, proposals and estimates.

  • Conducting technical training for mechanical engineers.

  • Devising methods for improving the quality of the design and the productivity of the Mechanical Group.

  • Reviewing all project wrap-up documents with the Chief Mechanical Engineer and revising department work instructions and standards where appropriate.

  • Conducting developmental performance reviews for the mechanical staff.

  • Reviewing general departmental policies and making recommendations regarding working conditions, staffing and training.

In addition, as required, the Mechanical Engineering Supervisor shall:

  • Interview job applicants for mechanical engineering positions and make recommendations to the Chief Mechanical Engineer.

  • Arrange for in house training and seminars.

  • Deal with staff disciplinary problems.

If assigned to a project:

  • Supervises and directs all Mechanical Engineering department personnel assigned to the project team.

  • Monitors all engineering activities to ensure conformance with Client and/or Company specifications, governing codes and good engineering practice.

  • Ensures that every effort is made to meet the project schedule within the budgeted man-hours allotted.

  • Provides input with regard to manpower staffing and scheduling of the project team's engineering effort.

  • Coordinate and participate in the development of the mechanical engineering man-hour estimates and obtain the required man-hours for various equipment activities from the appropriate focus group leaders.

  • Maintain the man-hour budgets, and manpower staffing plans.

  • Develop and maintain the mechanical engineering activities that are to be shown on the project schedule. Responsible for scheduling realistic project commitments for design deliverables and equipment deliverables.

  • Obtain and review the project scope and procedures. Distribute to the various assigned Specialist / Engineers as applicable.

  • Responsible for reporting on equipment status to the Project Manager / Engineering Manager and Mechanical Department Manager.

  • Establish computer based equipment list with the input provided by the Lead Process Engineer and keep the technical and commercial content current.

  • Initiate as applicable any Project Change Notice (PCN or Trend) that impact the Mechanical engineering man-hour budget or schedule.

  • Coordinate and cooperate with the Lead Engineers of other disciplines to ensure the smooth flow of all information to the task force.

  • Prepare and issue weekly and monthly status reports and progress reports to the Project Manager / Engineering Manager.

  • Review the accuracy of the expense reports submitted by personnel within the Mechanical Discipline for the project.

  • Maintain proper interface with the Client's representative through out the duration of the project.

  • Obtain all required costs and budgets for estimates.

  • Monitor work and progress of mechanical engineering personnel to ensure conformance to project procedures, job specifications, mechanical engineering responsibilities, accuracy and good engineering practice.

  • Monitor progress of mechanical engineering to ensure conformance to budget and schedule of the project.

  • Prepare closeout report and transfer files to Project Manager / Engineering Manager or Department Manager, as appropriate.


  • At a minimum B.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Minimum of 25 years of working in a consulting firm.

  • Minimum of 20 years of Canadian experience.

  • Active APEGA Member in good standing.

  • Excellent leadership, multitasking, time management, communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to mentor, guide, and lead teams of mechanical engineers in the office and as part of projects assignments.

  • Demonstrated ability to assist and prepare project proposals for the mechanical engineering department.

  • Extensive knowledge codes, standards and recommended industry practices for mechanical equipment.

  • Proven record of successful project delivery for all major EPC project phases.

  • Demonstrated ability to resolve technical problems during all project phases.

  • Demonstrated ability to resolve departmental and inter-discipline technical problems.

  • Demonstrated ability to resolve technical questions and concerns with clients.
