Jacobs provides all traffic engineering services for the City of Centennial’s Public Works Department. This position is an exciting learning opportunity for a student who is looking to explore or develop on-the-job experience related to traffic and transportation engineering. Our project site offers the best of both worlds: experience working for a global company like Jacobs in the private sector while directly serving the needs of and gaining experience in the public sector.

This temporary, full-time position will include field work to collect traffic data and conduct traffic engineering studies as well as office work to compile data and assist other staff in the preparation of technical reports, with other duties as assigned. The team that this position will be supporting includes engineering staff, operations staff, and traffic management center staff, all responsible for covering multiple areas of traffic and transportation engineering.

The position is a summer internship up to 16 weeks beginning in May. Work hours are generally 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 8 AM – 5 PM.

Depending upon experience and interest, work tasks could include:

  • Sign inspection and design

  • Inspection of pavement marking installations

  • Field data collection of traffic volumes

  • Traffic signal inspection and field data collection

  • Traffic signal timing and operations observations and analysis

  • Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) device monitoring and troubleshooting

  • Fiber optic and ethernet networking monitoring and troubleshooting

  • Review and update of data in the City’s asset management system

  • Interaction with constituents with respect to traffic engineering programs

  • Exposure to civil plans review and traffic impact study review and process

  • Opportunity to shadow staff in other project workgroups, including Streets; Construction Management; Right of Way Inspections; Field Services; etc.

This position may include work that would require repetitive lifting of equipment and instruments weighing 10 to 20 pounds. The work area can involve a working environment indoors as well as outdoors, which could cause exposure to outdoor elements; proper employee-furnished environmental/weather attire will be required. The use of appropriate company-provided safety equipment will be required in certain situations. Background screening and drug testing will be required. Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license and must be capable of personally driving a company vehicle in the performance of the duties contained herein.

Here’s what you’ll need :

  • In pursuit of a Bachelor of Science/Arts degree or higher

  • Must be at least a rising sophomore

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs

Ideally, you’ll also have:

  • 3.0 GPA

  • Self-driven time management and organizational skills

Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills

The base salary range for this position is $25.60 to $28.60 This range reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
