Duties and responibilities:

You will generally be responsible for supervision and technical direction over a team of engineers and designers when functioning as a lead engineer. As lead engineer, you will be responsible for total delivery of the structural deliverables and services on time, within performance budget and meeting quality expectations. Duties may include performing advanced engineering work serving as a technical specialist for a complex engineering assignment. Work at this level requires extensive progressive experience in structural engineering and involves utilization of project controls for cost, schedule and quality of projects. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Become thoroughly familiar with the work processes used in the office and with the Jacobs SOP’s applicable to your work: SOP 101, 102, 104 through 113, 201, 202, 204, 206, 207, 213, and 214.

  • Validating professional service and construction estimates at the beginning of a project, then tracking changes as the project progresses.

  • Producing professional service estimates in accordance with the department standards for project deliverables, project studies and estimates, change notices and for the development of new work through proposal efforts.

  • Establishing the design criteria, incorporating client requirements, estimate and/or scope basis and design basis meeting applicable state, local and federal standards and codes. Ensuring that any requirements for permitting have been established and communicated to the project team.

  • Knowing your scope and deliverables. Initiating timely change notices when deviation is made from your scope, affecting either schedule, deliverables or cost of the work.

  • Planning and organizing the work of your team. Communicating the plan to your team and the project leadership team, i.e. PM, PE, and client.

  • Maintaining control of the project by tracking and maintaining discipline performance budget progress, schedule commitments, and quality standards. Understanding and utilizing the project tools that are in place for project control.

  • Keeping the C/S Manager and Project Manager informed of project staffing and destaffing needs. Planning these needs in advance for orderly rotation of staff.

  • Delegating work to engineers and designers in proportion to their technical skills and experience, then following up for support to ensure efficient progress and quality. Keeping your team challenged.

  • Consulting with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure the smooth flow of vital information necessary for the scheduled completion of the project. Promoting communication between the team you supervise and other disciplines on the project.

  • Asking for assistance from the C/S Manager where department support can help to provide a resolution to a technical or supervisory problem on the task force. Always keeping the C/S Manager informed of project status and quality issues.

  • Reviewing performance of personnel assigned to you when requested by the C/S Manager.

  • Producing estimate level preliminary designs and material take-off suitable for the level of estimate being performed on a project.

  • Developing conceptual layouts and cost studies as necessary to determine the simplest, most efficient approach in solving engineering tasks at hand.

  • Being familiar with and utilizing the department design and drafting standards. Assuring that these standards are being effectively used on the project.

  • Being familiar with and utilizing the department structural programs, i.e. STAAD, Robot and structural component design software. Promoting the usage of computer design applications to the design team for efficient production of design.

  • Producing project designs with efficient use of construction materials with an overall emphasis on ease of construction and completed product meeting the expectations of the client.

  • Producing detailed design calculations and sketches for materials of construction associated with the project. Assuring that all calculations are neatly prepared and organized for efficient checking by others and efficient use by drafters/designers for preparing drawings and as a deliverable when required.

  • Checking calculations made by other engineers to ensure accuracy, conformance to codes, specifications, design criteria, and conformance to good engineering practice.

  • Producing construction specifications

  • Monitoring drawings in progress to ensure conformance to design calculations and specifications.

  • Assisting design/drafting in resolving routine layout and detailing problems. Ensuring that sufficient sketches and details are provided for completion of engineering drawings.

  • Reviewing/squad checking vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for structural input.

  • Producing bid packages enabling civil/structural purchase inquiries to be issued for procurement of materials or subcontract pricing.

  • Providing feedback to the C/S Manager regarding best practices for design and administration of projects.

  • Participating in the planning of training programs, continuous education opportunities and professional development of staff.

  • Monitoring work of structural teams on various projects by conducting an engineering audit when requested by the C/S Manager.

  • Look for ways to reduce project cost and schedule and for ways to improve our work processes. Be innovative and produce quality work done expeditiously.

  • Be positive and respectful in everything you say about the client or Jacobs or their personnel. Treat everyone as a professional. Set an example for others.

  • Mentor and train inexperienced engineers and designers to assist in the performance of their assignments; providing experience and good engineering practices for the industries related to the project assignment.

  • Contribute on your own time to the betterment of the organization through activities such as preparation of standard specifications, improved work processes or methods, training of others in the department, participation in proposal efforts, production of technical papers, etc.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • BS or MS in Civil / Structural Engineering

  • Chartered engineer prefereably MIStructE required for projects where functioning as lead engineer

Technical Competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of Eurocode, BSI and Irish design standards and codes

  • Knowledge and application of the Irish Building Regs

  • Theoretical and practical experience with structural computer programs

  • Knowledge of the application of CAD,Revit and Navis software for purposes of planning work and monitoring quality of deliverables.

  • Knowledgeable of the discipline specific methods, practices and techniques required to engineer, design and construct process and manufacturing projects

  • Experienced in estimating and scheduling professional service hours and assessing the progress and quality of civil/structural work

  • Complete understanding of the skills and experience required to perform engineering and design functions in an EPC environment


  • Proficient in the use of MS Word, Excel, and Mail

  • Good listening, writing, communications and conflict resolution skills

  • Able to lead teams to deliver on commitments
