About the Opportunity
The successful candidate will be based in our Harwell offices (we are happy to discuss hybrid working arrangements), and will focus on providing technical and scientific expertise to support our clients in a variety of challenges associated with the durability of container materials relevant to the storage and disposal of radioactive wastes, focusing on corrosion-related technical problems. Key materials and mechanisms of interest include the long-term corrosion resistance of copper, carbon steel and their interaction within an engineered barrier under conditions representative of those anticipated within a geological disposal facility. More broadly, the successful candidate will support our consultancy business in the areas of decommissioning and radioactive waste management. The post offers the opportunity to apply new and existing skills to solving real world problems as part of a team of corrosion consultants in a customer-focused environment. The candidate will work on a range of experimental and desk-based consultancy projects for owners and prospective owners of radioactive wastes, both in the UK and overseas. Our established client portfolio includes government organisations in the UK and abroad, including NDA, NWS, Sellafield Ltd, Magnox, SKB, Nagra and ONDRAF-NIRAS.
Key Responsibilities:
Routine work in our laboratory facilities based at Harwell and Culham to take active part in the setup and execution of key experiments/tests.
Deploying desk-based and lab/analytical capabilities to study and/or solve a variety of corrosion science challenges in the field of radioactive waste storage and disposal, focusing on container durability related technical problems. The work includes the design and execution of test programmes and associated data analysis and interpretation, as well as the provision of desk-based scientific consultancy services in relevant technical areas.
Demonstrating and promoting the highest levels of health and safety in all aspects of the role.
Supporting the production of high-quality technical reports.
Reviewing and assimilating data/information and technical reports produced by other members of the team.
Supporting successful interactions with clients, including presentation of key results and their interpretation in the context of client needs.
Supporting business development activities (including competitive bidding) in relevant technical areas.
Carrying out project management and project control activities.
Taking ownership of agreed work areas, and delivering work to agreed timescales, quality and cost.
Here’s what you’ll need :
A good first degree OR higher degree in a science or engineering discipline OR equivalent training/experience.
A PhD in Corrosion Science, Chemistry or Materials Science, OR equivalent working experience.
Good experimental / analytical skills with a focus on corrosion or materials science, ideally in the field of radioactive waste disposal.
Track record of deploying technical/scientific skills for technical challenges across chemistry or material science problems.
Numerate with excellent technical writing skills, demonstrated by recent publication of technical work in industry reports and/or scientific literature.
Flexible, innovative, and keen to develop and take ownership of client portfolio.
Able to identify and interpret data from suitable surface analysis techniques to underpin the assessment of corrosion processes.
Adaptable, able to work on and/or coordinate a number of varied projects at the same time, prioritising as appropriate.
Able to work within multi-disciplinary teams.
Enthusiasm to apply skills to the solution of real-world problems.
