About the opportunity:

Jacobs is currently recruiting for a Graduate Multi-phase Flow Modelling Consultant to join our Radioactive Waste Management and Disposal business. The successful applicant will be part of a multi-disciplinary team (including chemists, physicists, geologists, engineers, safety case specialists and mathematicians) to deliver a range of projects on behalf of UK-based and international customers, including waste management organisations, waste producers and regulators.

Our Waste Management, Disposal and Safety Case teams have led the field of research and assessment work related to the safe management and disposal of radioactive waste, for over 30 years. The team has a wide breath of both nationally and internationally respected expertise to provide consultancy, modelling, safety case and laboratory studies to underpin the science, technology and engineering to allow the safe management and disposal of radioactive waste.

You will be involved in delivering an exciting and diverse range of desk-based consultancy projects undertaken for our customers in the UK and overseas. The successful candidates will focus on modelling the physical and chemical processes associated with gas generation, reaction and migration, applying modelling tools to develop understanding and underpin the safety of geological and near-surface disposal facilities. You will also provide support to other projects in the areas of waste disposal, waste management and decommissioning. The post offers the opportunity to apply your skills to solving real world problems for our customers. All working is currently remote; flexible working arrangements are anticipated once a safe return to the offices can be made.

Key Responsibilities include:

Work on a range of consultancy projects for customers including radioactive waste producers, radioactive waste management organisations and regulators, both in the UK and overseas. This will include a wide variety of activities across the areas of radioactive waste management and disposal, including:

  • Applying modelling tools to investigate two-phase flows of gas and water in radioactive waste disposal facilities and their surroundings, and gas generation from radioactive waste packages.

  • Applying understanding of physical and chemical processes to identify key features of complex systems.

  • Analysing data to provide input to modelling.

  • Interpreting modelling results to address specific issues in support of disposal facility safety cases.

  • Producing concise and well-written technical reports and presenting results to customers.

  • Developing an understanding of the underlying requirements of our customers, and how we can meet those requirements.

  • Analysing problems and developing solutions.

  • Delivering work to agreed timescales.

  • Supporting other team members with business development activities.

Essential:

  • A degree in an earth / physical science, an engineering discipline or mathematics.

  • Experience in the development and application of mathematical models, including the use of numerical modelling tools.

  • Experience in analysis and interpretation of data and modelling results.

  • Technically able, with a demonstrable track record of creative problem solving.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to convey key elements of complex ideas to non-specialists.

  • Flexible, innovative and keen to develop skills.

  • Adaptable and able to work on a range of projects in multi-disciplinary teams, prioritising as appropriate.

  • Enthusiasm to apply skills to the solution of real-world problems.

  • Will need to be able to obtain appropriate security clearance.

Desirable:

  • Understanding and experience of modelling physical and chemical processes, particularly two-phase flow in porous media.

  • Experience in use of TOUGH codes, PFLOTRAN or other two-phase flow modelling tools.

  • Experience of scientific programming (e.g. Python, MATLAB).

  • Experience of computational programming (e.g. Fortran, C++, C#, Java).

  • Some experience or understanding of the nuclear industry would be beneficial.
