About the opportunity:

Jacobs is currently recruiting for a Senior Geochemical Modelling Consultant to join our Radioactive Waste Management and Disposal business. The successful applicant will be part of a multi-disciplinary team (including chemists, physicists, geologists, engineers, safety case specialists and mathematicians) to deliver a range of projects on behalf of UK-based and international customers. We provide consultancy, modelling, safety case and laboratory studies to underpin the science, technology and engineering to allow the safe management and disposal of radioactive waste.

You will be involved in delivering an exciting and diverse range of projects undertaken for our customers in the UK and overseas. The successful candidates will focus on the development of chemical models associated with the disposal of radioactive wastes, including their chemical interactions with groundwater, backfills, encapsulants and other components. You will also provide support to other decommissioning projects.

Key Responsibilities include:

As a Geochemical Modeller, you will work on a range of consultancy projects for customers including radioactive waste producers, radioactive waste management organisations and regulators, both in the UK and overseas. This will include a wide variety of activities including:

  • Provision of input to a range of technical areas; this is likely to include chemical modelling, and other forms of simple and complex geochemical modelling

  • Providing leadership to junior staff working in these areas

  • Production of concise and well-written technical reports that effectively communicate detailed geochemical information to non-specialists

  • Developing an understanding of the underlying requirements of our clients, and how we can meet them

  • Analysing problems, developing solutions and delivering work to agreed timescales

  • Supporting other team members with business development activities

  • A degree in geology / chemistry / geochemistry, preferably with a higher degree involving significant aspects of environmental geochemistry and/or hydrogeochemistry

  • A good understanding of geochemistry, geology, and mineralogy

  • At least 5 years post-graduate experience’ in the development and application of chemical models, including hydrogeochemical and reactive transport modelling

  • Technically able, with a demonstrable track record of creative problem solving

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Flexible, innovative and keen to develop skills

  • Adaptable and able to work on a variety of projects, prioritising as appropriate

  • Able to work in multi-disciplinary teams

  • Enthusiasm to apply skills to the solution of real-world problems

  • Will need to be able to obtain appropriate security clearance


  • A PhD in chemistry, environmental chemistry, geochemistry or geoscience

  • Experience working on problems relevant to the management and disposal of radioactive wastes

  • Experience in the development of chemical models for the prediction of interactions of contaminants with groundwater, engineered barriers and geological materials

  • Understanding of the chemical behaviour of radioelements and non-radiological contaminants under disposal conditions

  • Experience in the analysis of large geochemical datasets

  • Experience performing laboratory experiments studying sorption, solubility and diffusion of contaminants, under conditions relevant to safety assessment for waste disposal facilities

  • Experience of scientific programming (e.g. Python, MATLAB)
