About the opportunity:
Jacobs is currently recruiting for a Mathematician, Probabilist or Statistician to work with our ANSWERS Software Service, based at our Dorchester office.
The nuclear industry is moving away from traditional reactor designs to new small modular reactor (SMR) and advanced modular reactor (AMR) designs, with improved safety features and lower build costs. These new concepts bring exciting new modelling challenges requiring the introduction of innovative new mathematics, physics, engineering, and software engineering techniques.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative mathematician to implement cutting-edge mathematical techniques into ANSWERS software for solving the Boltzmann transport equation. This includes the use of mathematical techniques developed over the last decade or so, such as: the multi-level Monte Carlo method for efficient uncertainty quantification; sequential Monte Carlo methods; the use of quasi random (low discrepancy) sequences; reduced order modelling (ROM) using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and/ or machine learning; space-angle adaptivity for angular flux solutions; wavelet and simplified spherical harmonics angular representations; data assimilation to combine calculated and measured data to improve the fidelity of predictive models, etc.
We collaborate closely with universities to get the latest techniques into our codes, especially Imperial College London, Bath and Cambridge Universities and the Nuclear Futures Institute at Bangor University. The successful applicant is expected to mentor university research students and to produce journal and conference papers and present their work at appropriate international seminars, conferences, and workshops.
This role will present excellent opportunities for the continual development of skills and experience in mathematics, probability and statistics, particularly as applied to nuclear engineering; also, the potential to lead technical developments and collaborations, and to manage the team responsible for their implementation.
This role will be based at our Dorchester office with the opportunity to travel to client sites, as required. Some home / remote working is also available and considered appropriate as we continue to face the challenges of COVID 19. Consideration can also be given in respect to part time & flexible working hours.

An undergraduate degree in mathematics, physics or engineering or any other subject with a strong mathematical component
Experience of Monte Carlo and/or deterministic methods for solving the Boltzmann transport equation
A strong background in probability, statistical or mathematical theory and implementation
Programming skills in languages such as Fortran, Python or Java
Ability to think innovatively and to solve complex problems
Ability to absorb new technical skills quickly and efficiently
A higher degree in a related subject, or equivalent work experience
Experience of working in the nuclear industry
Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing with internal and external experts and customers
Self-motivated, with an ability and desire to work collaboratively with other organisations to create new opportunities
