Jacobs Senior Soil Specialist – BC or AB Canada in Edmonton, Alberta

Based out of Calgary, Edmonton, or a home office in a city in Western Saskatchewan or Eastern British Columbia with access to a major airport, you’ll work as part of our reclamation team as a senior soil specialist to contribute to the environmental planning and permitting efforts of privately-owned infrastructure projects. We’ll rely on you to further build our soils program, which includes leading and mentoring field crews and provide support on critical projects while fostering a culture of continuous learning as you bring fresh ideas to the table. You’ll have the opportunity to work as part of multi-disciplinary project teams associated with our Western Canada Offices to lead a variety of soil and reclamation-based field projects. You will support field data collection efforts, regulatory applications, and assist with the development of technical reports to company and industry standards. This position will start immediately, with an anticipated 80% office work and 20% fieldwork during the winter months and 75% of fieldwork and 25% office work during the spring, summer and fall months. A successful offer will be a full-time position with our reclamation team.

  • Diploma, B.Sc. or M.Sc. in environmental sciences or related field.

  • Hold or be eligible to obtain a professional designation, such as P.Ag or RT.Ag.

  • Demonstrated relevant experience completing various pre- and post-construction soil assessments throughout Western Canada. This includes classifying soil using the Canadian System of Soil Classification.

  • Ability to provide soil mapping based on desktop assessments and fieldwork, developing soil management units to inform construction projects. This often includes identifying soil series along a project footprint and providing soil handling mitigation.

  • Relevant experience completing general reclamation assessments (ie., Detailed Site Assessments or Post-construction Reclamation Assessments), identifying reclamation success or shortcomings and provide recommendations for further action, when required.

  • Willingness to work in the field in remote locations for extended periods of time.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, team-oriented, and suited to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

  • Strong time management skills, with the ability to simultaneously work on multiple tasks/projects and meet project deadlines.

  • Proven experience as a field and team lead, scoping projects from the proposal stage and supporting throughout all phases of the project.

  • A driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract.

Ideally, you’ll also have

  • Knowledge of Alberta’s 2010 Reclamation Criteria for Wellsites and Associated Facilities.

  • Experience completing Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments within Western Canada.

  • Experience working with linear development construction programs.

  • Experience using and analyzing remote sensing technology.

  • Experience or interest to support other biophysical study areas such as wildlife, wetlands and/or fisheries field assessments.
