This is a working level position that applies an intermediate-level of engineering technology and systems engineering concepts to the specific technical tasks at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC). This position specifically develops instrumentation for complex electrical power systems on NASA's newest manned X-Plane project. A background in electrical engineering and understanding of power distribution and electrochemical systems is highly desired.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design electronic and avionics systems, subsystems, units, and components as required.

  • Flight qualification of systems; system verification and validation testing.

  • Ensure performance of hardware development, qualification, test, and evaluation; perform integration of automated tools developed for simulation and systems test into the project-testing mainstream.

  • Analyze project objectives and requirements, develop plans for conducting projects, provide support for the project safety review process, including participation in the development of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, documentation of hazards, and the specification and implementation of mitigations to those hazards.

  • Conduct test planning including both ground and flight tests. Post flight data analysis and reporting.

  • Review project instructions to ascertain requirements, specifications, procedures, objectives, equipment, nature of technical problem, and possible solutions.

  • Set up and conduct tests or studies of complete systems, components, or concepts under research test conditions to investigate proposals for improving performance or other factors, or to obtain data for development, standardization, and quality control with some supervisory direction and review.

  • Record test or report procedures and results, numerical and graphical data, and makes recommendations for changes. Create project schedules to track progress on projects and to ensure that deadlines are met.

  • Generate and validate test procedures to ensure that all system requirements are met.

  • Analyze indicated and calculated results in relation to requirements, specifications, or test objectives.

  • Report status to Senior Technical Lead and/or Functional Area Lead as required.

  • Follow the safe practices and rules contained in the Jacobs Corporate Safety and Health Plan and other such rules and practices communicated on the job.

  • Perform work in accordance with NASA ISO AS9100 procedures and applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Application of Engineering principles and Systems Engineering processes.

  • Work in a dynamic and multi-task work environment by prioritizing work and coordinating task/project schedules.

  • Review project instructions to ascertain requirements, specifications, procedures, objectives, equipments, nature of technical problem, and possible solutions.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • BS Degree in Engineering or Physical Science along with 5 years related experience; or

  • MS Degree in Engineering or Physical Science along with 4 years related experience or

  • PhD in Engineering or Physical Science.

KSA's:

  • Work in a dynamic and multi-task work environment by prioritizing work and coordinating task/project schedules.

  • Review project instructions to ascertain requirements, specifications, procedures, objectives, equipments, nature of technical problem, and possible solutions.

  • Must perform work activities requiring interaction, negotiating, instructing, supervising, persuading or speaking with others.

  • Must be able to work under supervision and respond appropriately and professionally to criticism from a supervisor.

Essential Functions

Physical Requirements

  • Working at a computer or desk (considerations: sitting, eye strain, hand strain)

  • May involve long periods of sitting or standing.

Work Environment

  • Will work in a hangar and lab environment.

  • Can contain confined and restricted work areas.

  • Typically indoor conditions but heat may be a factor.

  • Noise levels can be high during testing periods.

  • Needs to have clear, concise and accurate communication skills

  • Need to work well with, co-operate, and support clients, supervisors, and co-workers

  • Standard office equipment and machines, computer workstation.

  • Working at a computer or desk

Attendance

  • Normal hours are Monday – Friday, between the core hours of 7:00am – 6:00pm.

  • Punctuality and regular attendance are necessary to meet deadlines

  • Regular attendance is necessary and required

  • This position may work weekends or second shift. Flexibility is required based upon workload.
