This is a senior working level position to provide engineering and technical expertise for system safety and hazard analysis applied to assigned projects for an organized, disciplined approach to the early identification and resolution of hazards impacting personnel, hardware, or mission success to a level as low as reasonably achievable. Selected candidate will provide support to the LBFD Project serving as a Safety Engineer.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Provide Safety Engineering expertise to the assigned NASA project(s).

  • Assist the Project Manager in the development, documentation, and implementation of the System Safety, Ground Safety, Continuous Risk Management (CRM), Lessons learned, and Reliability and Maintainability activities for the assigned projects.

  • Organize, attend, lead, and assess the effectiveness of the assigned project’s System Safety Working Group (SSWG).

  • Assist and support independent review group(s) chartered to provide independent assessments of the project.

  • Support the development and maintenance of an up-to-date database of identified hazards and risks throughout the life of the project.

  • Assist the Armstrong S&MA Office (Code S and Code SF) in the development of strategic and tactical planning activities to ensure that they have identified an attainable path of improvement for reliability, CRM, Safety, Software Assurance, Lessons Learned, mission success and risk identification/reduction in support of flight/ground hardware, and mission assurance programs.

  • Participate in project meetings, configuration control boards, design reviews, flight readiness reviews etc.

  • Assist in the development of sustainable network and web-based tools to collect and present hazard analysis information.

  • Follow the safe practices and rules contained in the Jacobs Safety and Health plan and other such rules and practices communicated on the job. Report project support status to the Functional Area Lead on a monthly basis and to the S&MA Branch Chief on a weekly basis.

  • Complete a variety of NASA and DoD training courses to qualify for the unique capabilities required by the various operating sites. These courses include, but are not limited to, Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) Control, Pyrotechnic Handling and Storage, Emergency Preparedness, Mishap Investigation, and other site-specific NASA and military training.

  • Must travel in support of the assigned duties. The total travel assignments may exceed 4 weeks per year.

  • Attends the weekly project support meetings with the AFRC (Code SF) Branch Chief and all Safety personnel.

  • Perform work in accordance with NASA ISO AS9100 procedures and applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Report status to Senior Technical Lead and/or Functional Area Lead, as required.

  • Mentors engineers in specific technical areas and/or the System Safety engineering processes

Education and Experience:

  • BS Degree in Engineering or Physical Science along with 20 years related work experience including 5 years as a group leader, project engineer, project manager or equivalent; or

  • MS Degree in Engineering or Physical Science along with 18 years related work experience including 5 years as a group leader, project engineer, project manager or equivalent; or

  • PhD in Engineering or Physical Science along with 15 years related work experience including 5 years as a group leader, project engineer, project manager or equivalent.

Knowledge, skills & abilities required:

  • Application of Engineering principles and Systems Engineering processes.

  • Lead teams in a dynamic and multi-task work environment by prioritizing work and coordinating task/project schedules.

  • Review project instructions to ascertain requirements, specifications, procedures, objectives, equipment, nature of technical problem, and possible solutions.

  • Leads teams to ascertain, manage and decompose requirements in specific technical areas.

  • Strong communications skills and ability to work in a team environment a must.

  • Experience in one or more of the following technology areas are highly desirable: Avionics hardware systems, commercial and military data busses, software design, development and management, real-time systems, or system test and validation.

Essential Functions

Physical Requirements

  • Working at a computer or desk (considerations: sitting, eye strain, hand strain)

  • May involve long periods of sitting or standing.

Work Environment

  • Office setting that includes sedentary physical effort. However, may include lifting of weight up to thirty (30) pounds asnecessary. Must be able to work well with co-workers and all levels of management. No hazards on job or unusualenvironmental conditions.

Equipment and Machines

  • Standard office equipment and machines, computer workstation.

  • Working at a computer or desk.


  • Must be able to work within the hours of 6:00 am and 3:00 pm.

  • Punctuality and regular attendance are necessary to meet deadlines.

  • With the exception of STD/LTD/FMLA & approved time off, attendance is considered essential

Other Essential Functions

  • Must pass drug testing.

  • Must be able to read and write effectively in English.

  • Travel Requirements - May be required to travel, but will be infrequent.
