This working level electronics technician position requires an intermediate level understanding of equipment support and organizational preventive and corrective maintenance on required equipment/systems including, but not limited to: problem identification, repair and/or replacement of defective items, configuration control and system checkout.

Must have circuit board level repair experience and experience with fiber optics. Must be able to travel and perform instrumentation installations and test set ups (25%).

Responsibilities Include:

Selected candidate will support the Flight Loads Lab. This effort includes (but is not limited to) the following:

  • Support structural instrumentation installation, checkout and development for both electrical and optical based systems applicable to both ground and flight test operations.

  • Bond and complete inner bridge wiring of resistive foil strain gauges and attach optical fiber Bragg gratings over large aircraft and test articles.

  • Install and setup additional sensors including but not limited to thermocouples, RTDs, string pots, digital displacement, LVDTs, etc.

  • Perform buildup, maintenance, operation, and monitoring of mechanical test structures, hydraulic systems, cryogenic and gaseous nitrogen systems, fiber optics, steel work, heaters, reflectors, hydraulic pumps, manifolds, servo valves, actuators, and cryogenic plumbing.

  • Detailed circuit board troubleshooting and repair.

  • Document all installations in accordance with NASA procedures, including providing RED Lines to drawings or procedures.

  • Erect structural assemblies by installing and connecting parts, fittings, and sub-assemblies.

  • Perform minor metallic part fabrication tasks.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical data, engineering data, and other specifications to determine layouts and sequences of operations.

  • Setup and use basic hand tools, power tools, and equipment.

  • Use NASA provided forklifts, man lifts, and overhead cranes

  • Utilize FLL specific test systems such as data acquisition systems, load or thermal control systems, Digital Image Correlation, thermography, etc.

  • Utilize Windows based computers and associated software including MS Word, MS Excel, and Autocad (or similar drafting package to utilize electronic drawings provided by others and create drawings of non-complex parts). Work with engineers to identify requirements of each installation and develop and implement the methodology.

  • Work with a team of technicians and engineers to support best practices to accomplish specific mission requirements.

  • Directly interact with the customer to analyze and support design, fabrication, operation and maintenance of facilities, test articles, and research aircraft

Qualifications

Educational Requirements:

  • Must have two years of college, trade school or military training along with 8 years related experience. Additional education may be substituted for a portion of the experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate and understand instructions from electrical systems engineers, read and understand schematics.

  • Ability to work with small sensors, wires, electronic components, and optical fiber; work under the microscope while fabricating electro-optical components and circuits.

  • Ability to solder surface mount flat-pack components.

  • Must have fiber optics experience.

  • Must have prior circuit board troubleshooting and repair experience.

  • Be multi-task oriented and capable of prioritizing along with the ability to manage schedules.

  • Integration expertise.

  • Hardware/software experience.

  • Wiring and cable harnesses assembly.

  • Ability to install, maintain, repair, overhaul, troubleshoot, modify, construct and test various types of equipment and\ components following detailed instructions.

  • Ability to work on electrical wiring and equipment up to 480VAC.

  • Knowledge of various mounting techniques for strain gauges and thermocouple, including understanding of different surface and performance requirements.

  • Understanding of hydraulic systems utilized for loading and actuating

  • Ability to learn and ultimately utilize FLL specific test systems such as data acquisition systems, load or thermal control systems, Digital Image corrilation, thermography, etc.

  • Ability to apply intermediate level technical and mechanical knowledge and skills to solve unusually complex problems and fix equipment to original required operational condition to support research/test prototype articles, facilities and aircraft.

  • Ability to identify and document the functional and physical characteristics of configuration items, control configuration changes, record and report configuration status.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment with other technicians and engineers.

  • Ability to clearly and effectively verbally communicate with test team members during test operations utilizing headset based communication systems.

Qualifications – Desired

  • Experience utilizing the MOOG load control system

  • Experience with Symvionics IADS display system

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Office setting that includes sedentary physical effort. However, may include lifting of weight up to thirty (30) pounds as necessary. Must be able to work well with co-workers and all levels of management. No hazards on job or unusual environmental conditions.

Physical Requirements

Must maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner to get along with customers, clients, co-workers and management.

Must perform work activities requiring interaction, negotiating, instructing, supervising, persuading or speaking with others.

Must be able to work under supervision and respond appropriately and professionally to criticism from a supervisor.

Must be able to commute between buildings to support work requirements. Independent transportation is required to commute between buildings and locations.

Equipment and Machines

Ability to operate office equipment such as personal computer, printer, copy machine, telephone, fax machine and other equipment including desk supplies and other work related tools as required.

Attendance

Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Regular attendance of scheduled hours is extremely important, but not critical, except for deadlines and meetings. Punctuality and regular attendance are necessary to meet deadlines. Must exhibit flexibility of work hours to adjust to surge situations based on critical mission requirements.

Other Essential Functions

Must demonstrate professional behavior at all times when dealing with customers, management and co-workers. Must have clear, concise and accurate communications skills in English, both verbal and written. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk to employees or others. Must maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner. Independent personal transportation to work site is required. Travel to and from customer's locations may be required to support projects. This may involve airline travel. In some cases, accommodations can possibly be made for POV, if necessary. When operating any vehicle for work purposes, must wear seat belt and in addition, no cellular devices are to be used when vehicle is in motion.
