This journey-man level position will support NASA's Structures Branch to perform structural and stress analysis of various research aircraft and experiments in NASA’s Flight Loads Lab (FLL). Structural analysis will be performed on existing NASA aircraft as well as future X-Planes in the early stages of design and development.

This effort includes (but is not limited to) the following:

  • Familiarity and/or experience working with

  • 3D CAD package including: Pro/E (Creo preferred), Catia, Unigraphics, Ideas Master Series Solidworks, AutoCAD, etc

  • Structural analysis of aircraft structure desirable.

  • Developing aerodynamic loads.

  • Mathcad and MatLab desirable.

  • Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 23 and Part 25 desirable

  • Structural requirements for military aircraft desirable.

  • MS office tools, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.

  • Perform independent stress analysis/checks

  • Design ground test fixtures and aircraft test fixtures

  • Assist with future flight/ground test planning;

  • Assist with future hazard analyses;

  • Assist with future ground functional tests;

  • Review project instructions to ascertain requirements, specifications, procedures, objectives, equipment, nature of technical problem, and possible solutions;

  • Set up and conduct tests or studies of complete systems, components, or concepts under research test conditions to investigate proposals for improving performance or other factors, or to obtain data for development, standardization, and quality control;

  • Ground and flight test planning and execution experience is preferred;

  • Ensure performance of hardware development, qualification, test, and evaluation; perform integration of automated tools developed for simulation and systems test into the project-testing mainstream.

  • Analyze project objectives and requirements, develop plans for conducting projects, provide support for the project safety review process, including participation in the development of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, documentation of hazards, and the specification and implementation of mitigation's to those hazards.

  • Conduct test planning including both ground and flight tests. Post flight data analysis and reporting.

Education and Experience:

  • BS Degree in engineering or physical science and 7 years general work experience including 5 years related work experience; or

  • MS Degree in engineering or physical science and 4 years related work experience; or PhD in engineering or physical science.

Knowledge, skills & abilities required:

  • Experience with metallic and composite structural analysis methods

  • Experience with analysis using industry standard hand calculation methods (i.e. Bruhn, Roark, Peterson)

  • Experience with Patran and Nastran FEM tools (preferred) or other industry FEM packages is highly desirable.

  • Able to read and understand mechanical detail and assembly drawings develop per ASME Y14.100.

  • Application of engineering principles and Systems Engineering processes.

  • Aeroacoustics envelope expansion experience preferred.

  • Must be able to work in a dynamic and multi-task work environment by prioritizing work and coordinating task/project schedules;

  • Ground test/flight test skills are preferred;

  • Review project instructions to ascertain requirements, specifications, procedures, objectives, equipment, nature of technical problem, and possible solutions;

  • Strong communications and ability to work in a team environment a must.

Essential Functions

Physical Requirements

  • Working at a computer or desk (considerations: sitting, eye strain, hand strain)

  • May involve long periods of sitting or standing.

Work Environment

  • Will work in a hangar and lab environment.

  • Can contain confined and restricted work areas.

  • Typically indoor conditions but heat may be a factor.

  • Noise levels can be high during testing periods.

  • Needs to have clear, concise and accurate communication skills

  • Need to work well with, co-operate, and support clients, supervisors, and co-workers

Equipment and Machines

  • Standard office equipment and machines, computer workstation.

  • Working at a computer or desk


  • Normal hours are Monday – Friday, between the core hours of 7:00am – 6:00pm.

  • Punctuality and regular attendance are necessary to meet deadlines

  • Regular attendance is necessary and required

  • This position may work weekends or second shift. Flexibility is required based upon workload.
