About the opportunities

Do you want to work in a field that matters – translating sustainability vision into real delivery – with enthusiastic people who care about this goal? There is considerable flexibility within this team to tailor roles to individual interests, career aspirations and other life commitments.

We work within the Energy, Security and Technology sector to deliver solutions to defence and security clients. With UK defence estimated to have a significant contribution of carbon emissions and considering the latest Net Zero commitments, there is much to do to adequately respond to the climate emergency and wider sustainability issues. Successful delivery needs to engage large numbers of people across a wide range of projects – estates, infrastructure, platforms, support services – and it needs to be done at pace. As a member of the Defence and Security sustainability network, you will have a key role in working with our clients, supply chain and internal teams to translate commitments into delivery and ensuring win-win outcomes.

This means you will need to be able to work on your own initiative and draw on the experience of those around you to deliver in a complex and challenging environment. Collaboration with the leadership team, sustainability experts and those in project delivery will be necessary to improve sustainability performance for Jacobs and for our clients. You will be able to see the bigger picture and know where the detail is important. You will have specialist knowledge in an area such as sustainability, environmental management, net zero, energy transition, circular economy, social value, business transformation, cultural/ behavioural change or climate change adaption/ resilience.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Understanding client and Jacobs’ sustainability requirements, and engaging teams to respond to this together with reporting progress/ outcomes/ metrics.

  • Enabling and delivering through others as part of a wider cultural evolution (behavioural change). This will include communications and delivering sustainability training appropriate to Jacobs and client audiences.

  • Working with sales team and those in key client-facing roles to ensure sustainability is embedded at the concept stage of all new projects.

  • Understanding key blockers and enablers (for example financing, accounting for value or business case processes) and overcoming these challenges to make sustainability ‘business as usual’.

  • Influencing business and client sustainability strategy, horizon scanning and identifying risks/ opportunities.

  • Assist in the creation of relevant sustainability deliverables for defence clients.

  • Gathering and sharing best practice and learning from experience.

  • Understanding and promoting the use of Jacobs’ suite of sustainability tools where relevant.

The role can be delivered a mixture of home and office working, and your base office could be any of our Jacobs’s offices. Some travel to Bristol and to UK-based client sites will be required.

Here’s what you’ll need :

  • A passion for sustainability

  • Degree qualified in sustainability or other relevant discipline

  • Excellent organisational skills, able to hold “big picture” and details of complex projects.

  • Excellent communication skills from good report writing, visual presentation and verbal communication, you will be able to convey often complicated concepts in a way that is both engaging and understandable to our clients and wider Jacobs team.

  • Excellent motivation. You need to be a self-starter, able to move forward without constant supervision and comfortable with asking for support when needed.

What else we provide

  • A flexible workstyle, embracing a hybrid working pattern and supporting those who need to balance work/life commitments a bit differently than others.
