Jacobs has an exciting opportunity for a New Structural Designer V located in our Greenville, SC office.

Position Summary

In this role, the Structural Designer will work closely under the direction of the Lead Structural Engineer and Structural Designer. This role is responsible for preparing detailed construction drawings for steel and reinforced concrete structures using structural specifications, engineering calculations, sketches, detailed drawings, and design information according to project standards and procedures.

This position requires coordination with other discipline designers such as mechanical, electrical, piping and project team members to ensure a complete and timely production of drawing packages, spreadsheets, and databases to document information related to design. The designer will become familiar with work processes for the Office and the Department.

Position Responsibilities

  • The Structural Designer will work on a variety of projects pertaining to industrial clients ranging from plant modifications to new facilities.

  • The Structural Designer will work alongside more experienced engineers and designers to perform 2D drafting and 3D modeling tasks. Design will be prepared using Office and Department standards and procedures.

  • The Structural Designer will become familiar with project scopes, specifications and design criteria when assigned to a project team. He or she must participate in design reviews with other disciplines to evaluate design concepts and make recommendations.

  • The Structural Designer must be receptive to directions in the preparation of acceptable technical solutions. The Structural Designer must interact well with other disciplines in order to complete tasks.

  • The Structural Designer must review vendor submittals and equipment drawings.

  • The Structural Designer will be responsible for acquisition and presentation of field data.

  • The Structural Designer must be a self-starter who willingly accepts and seeks challenging responsibilities and takes ownership of results and performance.

  • The Structural Designer must have the ability to take on increasing roles of responsibilities as their skills develop and grow eventually into a Senior Designer role.

  • The Structural Designer must meet Office work schedule with regular and reliable attendance.

  • The Structural Designer will work alongside engineers to develop conceptual layouts for cost studies as necessary to determine the simplest and most cost effective designs for clients.

  • The Structural Designer will be expected to travel to job sites, client offices or other Jacob’s offices to perform their duties as required.

  • The Structural Designer will be expected to perform all work to the best of their ability in an efficient manner without unnecessary errors.

  • The Structural Designer must have a minimum of 7years’ of relevant experience in the drafting / design of steel and reinforced concrete.

  • The ideal range of experience is 7 to 10 years and related to industrial facility design (e.g. pulp & paper, chemical, power, pharmaceutical, etc.).

  • The Structural Designer is required to have2 years’ of technical school education with CAD and structural drafting / design or equivalent or Associate's Degree in Architectural or Engineering Design Technologies.

  • The Structural Designer must havesolid conceptual and design process skills and good problem solving ability.

  • The Structural Designer must have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

  • The Structural Designer must have the ability to consistently meet deadlines, completing tasks as previously defined.


  • The Structural Designer must be fluent in 3D modeling. A working knowledge of either Intergraph SmartPlant 3D or AutoDesk Revit 3D is preferred. Candidates with other 3D modeling software capabilities will be considered, however the Structural Designer must be a self-starter, willing and highly motivated to learn new software quickly in a production oriented environment.

  • The Structural Designer must be fluent in either, or both, of the following CAD software applications:AutoCad; Microstation.

  • The Structural Designer must be capable of using multiple CAD platforms interchangeably with similar drawing presentation styles and no productivity loss.

  • The Structural Designer must have good listening, writing and communication skills.

  • The Structural Designer must be proficient in the use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Mail.

Other Requirements

  • Working knowledge of managing engineering budgets and Earned Value is preferred.

  • Working within client facilities and at times within sister offices may be required. As such the Structural Designer will be expected to travel to job sites, client offices or other Jacob’s offices to perform their duties as necessary.
