NASA's Mission Operations for the International Space Station is located at Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, TX. On Jacobs' JETS contract we provide science and engineering services, digital solutions, and operations support and products for all major NASA programs. These NASA programs include the International Space Station, Orion, and several other space science and technology development projects. The contract also covers curation and research on the various astromaterials brought to earth from the moon, other planets, and interstellar space.

Jacobs is currently seeking a Communications Systems Engineer to support NASAs Mission Operations for the International Space Station. This individual will have expertise in communication systems such as phase modulation, spread spectrum, signal detection, signal and interference analysis, baseband filtering and data formatting.

This role will be responsible for providing communications engineering support from Johnson Space Center to the largest space station ever built. The successful candidate will act as an integral part of the team to ensure the goal of delivering quality products and services that meet and exceed expectations.

The Communications Systems Engineer will:

  • Perform Radio Frequency interference and compatibility analysis for Space based communication systems.

  • Determine the performance of Radio Frequency (RF) communication links and create link budgets using analytical methods or by applying analysis to simulation tools.

  • Perform coordination tasks for RF systems and interface with other NASA centers and federal agencies to resolve interference issues.

  • Perform data reductions, analyze and document results for presentation to customers.

  • Work with antennas, antenna polarization, power spectral density & spectral roll-off, power flux density, noise density and CCSDS standards.

  • Perform analysis using software such as Matlab and Simulink.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited engineering school.

  • Must have completed Communication Theory course work while attending college if no hands on professional related work experience.

  • Knowledge of digital communications, RF system analysis, FEC coding, and communications engineering.

  • In depth understanding of communication systems such as phase modulation, spread spectrum, signal detection, signal and interference analysis, baseband filtering, and data formatting.

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills along with the ability to work in a team environment.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.

Work Environment

Generally an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 10 lbs. (5% of time).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
