We have the unique and significantrole to partner with NASA at Johnson Space Center (JSC), to be part of everyhuman spaceflight program – the International Space Station (ISS), NASA’s Orionspacecraft, which will carry astronauts into deep space, and Gateway, theorbiting platform providing the home for astronauts to work and travel back andforth to the moon’s surface, and serving as the platform for deep spaceexploration. From critical systems onthe ISS to enable astronauts to live and work in space; to performing advanceddevelopment for systems leading to deep space exploration; to being part of thefoundation for Gateway.

We also partner with NASA at JSC,the only NASA center in the United States to curate all astromaterial samplesreturned from exploration missions, to perform curation services, orbitaldebris analysis, and basic research to further humankind’s understanding of theorigins of our solar system.

We are currently in need of a Fluid Systems Mechanical Engineer tojoin our team. Do you have the following skills?

The Fluid Systems Mechanical Engineer will:

  • SupportJohnson Space Center's activities on the International Space Station and spaceexploration.

  • Work in ateam environment to analyze requirements from the customer and develop designsolutions.

  • Design,develop, test, handle implementation, and analysis of technical products andsystems.

  • Design unique testsfixtures and methods for various test programs.

  • Develop required systemdocumentation such as procedures and hazard analyses.

  • Maintain the high levelof technical excellence for all tasks to ensure the highest quality oftechnical products including test setups, test operations, development setups,development operations, documentation generation, execution and close out.

  • Performengineering design evaluations.

  • Performextensive testing on space hardware.

  • Prepare andpresent designs at various design reviews using MS Word and PowerPoint.

  • Produceengineering drawings conforming to applicable standards.

  • Performdimensional fit analysis including thermal effects.

  • Performfunctional analyses, when applicable, and sizing structural analyses.

  • Prepare andpresent designs at various design reviews using MS Word and PowerPoint.

  • Produce other required design documentation.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Gathering anddocumenting test requirements.

  • Authorizing testpreparation plan that includes requirements, cost and schedule.

  • Overseeing testpreparation with test facility engineering.

  • Leading fuel cell testoperations.

  • Reviewing andpresenting test data to fuel cell test team.

  • Identifying potentialsafety risks and over-see implementation of hazard mitigation.

  • Identifying technicalrisks and oversee implementation of mitigation.

  • Participate in fueltest planning and technical review meetings within JSC and with other NASAcenters.

  • Understand fuel cellmembrane electrode assembly fabrication and in situ electrochemical diagnostics.

  • Perform other duties asrequired.


Required Education/Experience/Skills:

This position hasbeen posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience,requirements and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates atany level for which this position has been advertised.

  • BS degreein mechanical engineering from an accredited engineering school with 0 –10 yearsof direct engineering experience.

  • Must havethe ability to produce drawings, perform dimensional fit tolerance analysis, includingthermal effects and to support design with standard hand calculations for fit,function, and structural strength.

  • Must have aminimum of 3 years of experience using solid modeling CAD software.

  • Excellentoral and written communication skills.

  • Must haveworking knowledge of machine shop processes and familiarization with the structuraland thermal analysis process in development of hardware.

  • Must haveexperience with pressure, thermal, vacuum systems.

  • Must have knowledge of fluid,pneumatic, and hydrostatic systems.

  • Must have knowledge offluid system and components. This includes basic fluid component typesand functions as well as operation of gaseous oxygen and hydrogen systems.


  • BS degreein Mechanical Engineering.

  • Experience designingand testing hardware.

  • Knowledgeable in highpressure mechanical systems and fuel cells.

  • Project managementexperience.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally an office environment, butcan involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). Mayrequire lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).


Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peakperiods and surge requirements when required.
