Image Data Scientist


Jacobs, Engineering, Technology and Science contract (JETS) provides products and technical services related to human operations in space through development and integration of a broad spectrum of engineering requirements. This includes human spacecraft flight and flight development products, human exploration mission planning for NASA, institution support services, and new technology development.

We're looking for an Image Data Scientist to join our team.

The Image Data Scientist will support the Science Directorate at NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC) in the field of earth and planetary science.

The Image Data Scientist will:

  • Implement image and earth science data science solutions – such as classification taxonomies, content based image retrieval, and data mining - to increase efficiencies in data management and to add value and accessibility to imagery databases.

  • Georeference imagery and analyze astronaut photography of the Earth.

  • Provide proposal support for new funding opportunities.

  • Develop research papers/posters using astronaut photography / other ISS payloads.

  • Provide GIS support for multiple projects within NASA’s Astromaterials Research and Exploration Sciences Division.

  • Provide support to ISS Earth Science Payloads/advisory groups

  • Interact with scientists, engineers, managers in a highly dynamic and occasionally time-critical environment.

  • Perform other duties as required.


Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • BS degree in computer science, computational science, GIS, math or a related field from an accredited college or university in an associated technical discipline.

  • Solid knowledge of statistical modeling and machine learning techniques and the ability to identify which technique is relevant to the problem in hand.

  • Ability to tackle problems regarding data quality, clustering, dimensionality, etc.

  • Ability to work with big data sets and mine relationships with them.

  • Ability to quickly develop scripts that can digest data would be a valuable skill.

  • Knowledge of machine learning algorithms (i.e. convolutional neural networks, random forest classifiers) and computer vision algorithms (i.e. 3D histogram matching, k-means clustering and image fingerprinting) to do image classification, object detection, and semantic segmentation and potentially enable automated feature recognition.

  • Oral and written communication skills are required.


  • MS degree preferred.

  • Programming in data-crunching languages such as python, 'R', IDL, etc. is desired.

  • Experience with at least one deep learning framework (keras, tensorflow, pytorch, caffe, etc.) is a plus.

  • Knowledge of image processing and GIS (i.e. ArcGIS, ArcIMS, ENVI/IDL, ERDAS Imagine, Generic Mapping Tools, etc.) and database software, imagery interpretation/analysis (aerial and/or satellite imagery) is a plus.

  • Background or interest in earth science, geology, and/or planetary science is a plus.

Work Environment

Generally an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 10 lbs (5% of time).

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
