We have the unique role to partner with NASA at Johnson Space Center (JSC), to be part of every human spaceflight program – the International Space Station (ISS), NASA's Orion spacecraft, which will transport astronauts into deep space, the orbiting platform providing the home for astronauts to work and travel back and forth to the moon's surface, and serving as the platform for deep space exploration. From systems on the ISS to help astronauts live and work in space; to performing advanced development for systems supporting deep space exploration; to being part of the foundation for Gateway.
We also partner with NASA at JSC, the only NASA center in the United States to curate all astromaterial samples returned from exploration missions, to perform curation services, orbital debris analysis, and basic research to further humankind's understanding of the origins of our solar system.
We are looking for a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer - Exploration Space Suit to join our team. Do you have the following skills?
We are actively searching for qualified candidates for this potential opening, however we do not have assurance at this time if and when the position will be finalized and opened. Because we have strong reason to believe the position will be approved soon, we are proceeding with identifying qualified candidates and conducting interviews.
The Lead Mechanical Design Engineer - Exploration Space Suit will:
Work in a team environment to analyze requirements and develop design solutions for the International Space Station and Exploration Space Suit, on the Test and Ground Support Equipment (TSE and GSE).
Design, develop, test, handle implementation, and analysis of technical products and systems.
Perform engineering design evaluations.
Produce engineering drawings conforming to JPR 8500 and other applicable standards.
Perform dimensional fit tolerance analysis including thermal effects.
Perform functional analyses, when applicable, and sizing structural analyses.
Produce drawings conforming to ASME Y14.5 as well as support design with standard hand calculations for fit, function and structural strength.
Prepare and present designs at various design reviews using MS Word and PowerPoint.
Produce other preferred design documentation.
Perform other tasks assigned.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
The position is posted at multiple levels. Depending on your experience, requirements and our needs , we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position is advertised.
BS degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school and fourteen (14) years of direct engineering experience, or a MS degree from an accredited engineering school and twelve (12) years of direct engineering experience, or Ph.D. and nine (9) years of direct engineering experience.
Must have the ability to produce drawings conforming to ASME Y14.5, perform dimensional fit tolerance analysis including thermal effects and to support design with standard hand calculations for fit, function, and structural strength.
Must have experience designing flight hardware and creating drawings for NASA/JSC, and familiarization with JSC Engineering Drawing System Manual (JPR 8500) and JSC Fabrication Tolerances and Practices (SKZ36103755).
Must have experience using 3D solid modeling CAD software, including experience using PTC CREO or Pro Engineering 3D CAD software.
Must have working experience guiding mid-size and large projects of mechanical designer and drafting teams.
Must have knowledge of machine shop processes and familiarization with the structural and thermal analysis process in development of hardware.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
Must have design experience with Environmental control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) and mechanisms for space applications.

Generally an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).
