Manufacturing Engineering Technologist
NASA’s Mission Operations for the International Space Station is located at Johnson Space Center. On Jacobs’ JETS contract we provide engineering services to JSC. Come join us and be a vital part of operating the largest space station ever built. We’re looking for a Manufacturing Engineering Technologist.
We are actively searching for qualified candidates for this potential opening, however we do not have assurance at this time if and when the position will be finalized and opened. Because we have strong reason to believe the position will be approved soon, we are proceeding with identifying qualified candidates and conducting interviews.\
The selected applicant will:
Manage a variety of small to large and complex projects, including flight and non-flight hardware, GSE, Test support and commercialization projects.
Perform manufacturing process development and new equipment research and installation.
Serve as liaison between Customers, NASA, Projects, Design, and others for project definition, scope, changes and revisions.
Coordinate manufacturing efforts from early design through manufacturing and assembly.
Evaluate part designs for cost effective manufacturing and successful assembly.
Identify long lead materials and fasteners and assist in procurement to preserve project schedules.
Estimate manufacturing/shop processing times for a variety of parts and assemblies for planning and scheduling purposes.
Assist in materials and hardware procurement process.
Track design projects from initiation, and assess project readiness to enter the manufacturing phase.
Clarify customer requests and coordinate the input of project requirements into Manufacturing.
Generate and negotiate drawing release schedules between the Customer and Manufacturing.
Coordinate manufacturing activities with shop floor and outside vendors.
Monitor progress of Customer requests through Manufacturing.
Communicate with Project Engineers on drawing updates/redlines and corrections.
Provide status to and coordinate priority changes with the project team and/or Customer.
Perform project management for quality, cost and delivery.
Develop assembly procedures and processes, including alternative assembly methods.
Identify hardware and special tooling requirements for assembly operations.
Integrate project requirements into manufacturing and assembly schedules.
Develop and update applicable engineering standards and manufacturing process documents, such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Process Specifications (PRCs), and Detailed Processing Instructions (DPIs).
Provide manufacturing engineering support for Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Best Practices and facility process capabilities.
Incorporate process and equipment improvements to support cost competitiveness and overall efficiency, such as developing and documenting the work flow of Off-line CAM programming to machining.
Research materials and develop in-house processes to introduce new capabilities into the Shop or for environmental compliance.
Identify manufacturing needs and research equipment to enhance overall JSC Manufacturing capabilities.
Perform breakeven analysis of in-house equipment to determine upgrade verses new purchase.
Develop purchasing requirements for procurements of new manufacturing equipment.
Coordinate the delivery and installation of the equipment assuring compliance with all JSC safety policies.
Coordinate training and final checkout of personnel.
Support compliance for safety and all procedures, policies, OSHA, environmental & JSC regulations.
Support management & meet deliverables as required.
Ability to create and present professional presentations.
Attend technical seminars or technical tool shows to maintain expertise in advanced technology.
Perform other duties as required.

BS degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of five (5) years of related experience, or a MS degree and a minimum of four (4) years of related experience, or Ph.D. from an accredited college or university.
Excellent verbal communication and written presentation skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in leading and managing a high performing team.
Effectively organize, manage and prioritize responsibilities for multiple projects with overlapping schedule demands.
Experience in a manufacturing environment with emphasis in CNC, lathes, mills, and sheet metal fabrication.
Strong computer skills and experience in utilizing software tools such as ACAD, ProE, Microsoft Word and Excel, Office, Outlook, and Project.
Able to make independent, technical and tactical decisions with a high attentiveness to detail.
5 years experience in a manufacturing environment with emphasis in CNC, lathes, mills, and sheet metal fabrication.
Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing degree and ten years of experience in the field.
Experience with machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, and composites manufacturing.
Experience in Aerospace, Defense or Automotive manufacturing environment.
A familiarity with the NASA/JSC hardware development and Engineering Life Cycle processes.
A working knowledge of the NASA/JSC drawing system JSC 8500, the Engineering Drawing Control Center (EDCC) and Design and Data Management System (DDMS).
Familiarity of quality procedures and documentation for Class 1 Flight Hardware, including material test reports, certificates of compliance, and heat treat and other quality records.

Generally an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 10 lbs (5% of time).

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
