We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer - NASA Humanoid Robot to join our team. Do you have the following skills?

The Mechanical Design Engineer will:

  • Support NASA’s development of the next generation humanoid robot.

  • Work in a team environment in NASA’s Robotic Systems Technology Branch to analyze requirements and develop design solutions for advanced robot mobility and actuation.

  • Build on the success of the existing Valkyrie and Robonaut 2 humanoid robots and advance NASA’s ability to project a remote human presence and dexterous manipulation capability into challenging, dangerous, and distant environments, both in space and here on earth.

  • Design, develop, test, analyze, and implement robotic systems and components.

  • Produce engineering CAD models and drawings conforming to applicable standards.

  • Perform dimensional tolerance analyses, including thermal effects and GD&T.

  • Perform functional, structural, and thermal analyses as required.

  • Prepare, support and present design reviews as required.

  • Produce other design documentation and perform other reporting duties as required.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • BS degree in mechanical engineering.

  • Experience with electric actuator design.

  • Familiarity with series elastic actuators.

  • Experience designing parts and assemblies using 3D CAD modeling software.

  • Experience producing drawings conforming to ASME Y14.5.

  • Experience applying tolerance analyses, including thermal effects and GD&T.

  • Experience with common machine shop processes and rapid prototyping (3D printing).

  • Experience with both structural and thermal analysis of parts and assemblies.

  • Experience using generative design tools to design optimal, efficient parts.

  • Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills.

  • Experience using PTC CREO, Pro/Engineer, Solidworks, Catia or other similar CAD software.

Preferred Experience/Skills:

  • Prior NASA (especially JSC) or aerospace development & manufacturing experience.

  • Experience with robot design, particularly multi-DOF walking robotics.

  • Experience with FEA using NASTRAN/PATRAN or similar.

  • Experience using MatLab.

  • Experience with electric vehicle design.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
