We have an exciting opportunity for a NanoSIMS Scientis t within the Science and Exploration Department.

The NanoSIMS Scientist will:

  • Support the Astromaterials Research & Exploration Science Directorate (ARES) at NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC) in the field of cosmochemistry and planetary science and provide support for NASA missions.

  • Develop new techniques in isotopic analyses of astromaterials and analogs that advance NanoSIMS capabilities.

  • Support funded work of in-house projects, as well as support visitors and collaborators from diverse backgrounds in all aspects of experimentation and analysis.

  • Conduct independent research in cosmochemistry and presolar grains by analyzing astromaterial samples using the NanoSIMS.

  • Actively pursue collaborations and development of projects within and outside of ARES involving analysis of astromaterials samples and analogs.

  • Assist with routine upkeep and maintenance of the NanoSIMS instrument.

  • Provide service to NASA and the scientific community as required in their area of expertise through panel reviews and peer-review of manuscripts.

  • Summarize, communicate, and publish quantitative scientific results.

  • Meticulously document procedures and results, and actively participate in safety programs.

  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • BS degree from an accredited college or university in an associated technical discipline and four (4) years related experience, or MS degree in an associated technical discipline with two (2) years of related experience, or Ph.D. in an associated technical discipline.

  • Must have at least 2 years of experience operating a NanoSIMS instrument as an independent user.

  • Experience working with geologic samples, in particular primitive chondrites, interplanetary dust particles, and their components, and conducting independent research on

  • these samples.

  • Experience working in a laboratory environment preparing astromaterial samples, conducting analyses, summarizing results, preparing reports for internal and external use,

  • writing abstracts for submission to national and international meetings, writing proposals for funding, and contributing to the preparation of manuscripts for publication in

  • peer-reviewed journals.

  • Must have knowledge of the theory and practice of isotopic analyses of geologic samples and data reduction.

  • Good computer skills are essential.

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills.

Requisition Preferences:

  • BS degree from an accredited science school and four (4) years of direct science experience, or MS degree from an accredited science school and two (2) years of direct science\

  • experience, or Ph.D. in an associated technical discipline.

  • ​A Ph.D. and at least two additional years of relevant laboratory experience.

  • Direct NanoSIMS experience performing both spot and image mode analyses of numerous isotopic systems.

  • Experience with analysis of presolar grains and other fine-grained materials by NanoSIMS.

  • Experience with electron beam instruments (SEM, EPMA, TEM, and/or FIB).

  • Experience with analytical technique development and innovation.

  • Experience with astromaterials, and generally, irreplaceable samples.

  • Experience developing and using matrix matched standards to improve the precision of isotope measurements.

  • The most competitive candidates will also demonstrate how their research goals will contribute broadly across and complement research topics within the Science Department and ARES Research.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).


Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
