NASA’s Mission Operations for the International Space Station is located at Johnson Space Center. On Jacobs’ JETS contract we provide engineering services to JSC. Come join us and be a vital part of operating the largest space station ever built. We’re looking for a Portable Life Support System (PLSS) Systems Testing Lead Engineer.

The selected candidate for this role will:

  • Provide systems level testing of oxygen, ventilation, and thermal control subsystems in the Portable Life Support System (PLSS).

  • Develop the PLSS Verification and Validation Documentation (PLSS V&VD) in coordination with component managers’ end item specifications, including qualification and environmental requirements for the Space Station Program.

  • Work with the PLSS Systems Engineering and Integration team to define the integrated system level tests and test objectives to perform Design Verification Testing and Qualification testing for the PLSS assembly.

  • Manage individual test directors assigned to each major test in the areas of electrical integration, thermal/vacuum, EMI/EMC, vibration and static magnetics.

  • Review and approve test plans and test procedures such that they reflect all of the required content to satisfy the PLSS V&VD.

  • Update the integrated schedule with the test development and execution status.

  • Act as the test requestor at Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs) for each of the specified major tests.

  • Review and approve the summary quick-look report and final test report for each of the major tests, ensuring that all requirements levied from the V&VD have been met.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • BS degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school and a minimum of ten (10) years of direct engineering experience, or a MS degree from an accredited engineering school and a minimum of eight (8) years of direct engineering experience, or Ph.D. degree and a minimum of four (4) years of experience.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to coordinate support from a wide range of technical disciplines.

  • Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures in the field, such as mechanical and electrical system design, engineering drawings and sketches, material selection, environmental testing, and office software.

  • Demonstrated experience in test engineering of complex electro-mechanical systems.

Preferences:

  • Experience with Life Support hardware, particularly electrical/mechanical hardware related to oxygen, ventilation, thermal control systems.

  • Familiarity with the hardware elements of the oxygen/ventilation/thermal loops (such as fans, pumps, controllers, filters, flow meters, relief valves, control valves, heating elements, water quality instrumentation, temperature sensors, and pressure transducers).

Work Environment

Generally an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 10 lbs (5% of time).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
