Robotics and autonomous system technologies are being developed at breakneck speed these days and NASA is on the cutting edge of this development. On the Jacobs JETS contract, we provide services to NASA’s Johnson Space Center that include developing new capabilities for a wide range of robotic and autonomous systems, everything from humanoid robots like Robonaut and Valkyrie to autonomous rovers that can explore other planets, autonomous systems for maintaining lunar, Mars, and deep space habitats, and exoskeletons that can be used to supplement the strength of astronauts or to help them exercise in weightless environments.

To fulfill this critical role, we are looking for someone that will:

  • Design and develop software for complex robotic and autonomous systems that performs a wide range of functions such as motion control, path planning, machine vision, and sensor data collection.

  • Develop software tools to run testing and collect and analyze test data.

  • Maintain strict source code control.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • BS degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school and zero (0) to nine (9) years of direct engineering experience, or a MS degree from an accredited engineering school and zero (0) to seven (7) years of direct engineering experience, or Ph.D. degree from an accredited engineering school and zero (0) to three (3) years of direct engineering experience.

  • Experience developing software for robotic systems in one or more of the following specialty areas:

  • Perception and/or Machine Vision.

  • Grasp Planning.

  • Localization and Mapping.

  • Manipulation.

  • User Interface/User Experience Design.

  • 3D Rendering and Simulation.

  • Message-Based Middleware.

  • Real-Time Safe Control Loops.

  • Component-Based Software Development.

  • Proficiency developing robotic applications using C , Python, and ROS in a Linux environment.

  • Experience working in a modern software development environment including the use of continuous integration, devops, unit testing, etc.

  • Knowledgeable in source control systems such as Git, Github, Bitbucket or SubVersion

  • Strong communication skills and comfort developing on a small, agile software team.

Preferences:

  • Proficiency in Java.

  • Graduate-level research experience (MS/PhD) in robotics and/or computer science.

  • Experience integrating and testing software on physical robot platforms.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 10 lbs (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
