We have an exciting opportunity for a Software Developer .

​The mid-career Software Developer will help build software to support the planning and execution of extravehicular activity (EVA). The EVA Mission Software System (EMSS) project is building software tools that will help flight controllers, scientists, and subject matter experts answer the questions of 'where are we?', 'what are we doing?', and 'what are we learning?' during spacewalks in Earth's orbit and on the Moon. This position is specifically addressing the question of 'where are we?' by working on a small team that is building a tool that 'makes maps useful for EVA planning and execution' to meet the needs of human planetary exploration missions.

As a Software Developer for the EVA Mission System Software team for NASA JSC's Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science division you will:

  • Work in a small team environment alongside NASA software engineers, planetary scientists, flight controllers and report to project lead or project manager for technical support, task assignment, and processes

  • Code, build, test, and deploy feature enhancements to core products in the EMSS software portfolio

  • Plan and execute software troubleshooting to resolve bugs

  • Generate demonstrations and provide tutorials of the software tools you will build to a broader NASA community

  • Interact frequently with other Jacobs/JETS teams and departments as well as other contractors and civil servants

  • Perform job functions based on pre-established guidelines or instructions

  • Perform other duties as required

Here’s What You’ll Need:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • Typically has a BS degree in a computer or system science discipline from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of progressive, relevant experience, or an MS degree in a computer or system science and four (4) years of progressive experience, or Ph.D. degree in a computer of system science discipline

  • Professional work experience testing and launching software products, experience with software design and architecture

  • Experience in software development using a general-purpose programming language and web technologies (e.g., JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Node.js, React, SQL).

  • Experience architecting and developing distributed systems design

  • Self-motivated, team player and adaptable to a dynamic environment and the ability to complete all assignments as required

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and will be expected to effectively interact with teammates, customers, and management at all levels

  • Ability to prepare written documents and to verbally present at various meetings.

  • Ability to visualize and work with complex software systems and work with others in problem solving as part of a team.

  • Able to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and schedules with limited supervision.

  • Interest and willingness to learn deploying solutions to cloud infrastructure

  • Interest in contributing to the advancement of human spaceflight

Requisition Preferences:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience

  • Hands on technical leadership experience leading project teams and setting technical direction.

  • Experience with Geographic Information System (GIS) product manipulation, visualization and analysis (e.g. GDAL, PostGIS, map web services)

  • Experience deploying to cloud platforms (e.g. AWS) and containerization systems (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes)

  • Experience architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact.

  • Interest and ability to learn other coding languages

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).


Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
