This opportunity will provide systems engineering, requirements management, and element/system level integration support for Ground Support Equipment (GSE) to the MSFC Systems Analysis Branch (EV74) for the Space Launch System (SLS) and Stages Office.

The successful candidate will support the GSE team that is responsible for performing the system engineering and integration, design, test, analysis, fabrication, assembly, and delivery of all ground support hardware necessary to meet the flight hardware ground operations needs from the manufacturing facility to the launch site.

The systems engineering support that will be provided and performed by the candidate includes:

  • Participate in the integration and testing of the Core Stage GSE in the Test Load Facility (TLF) and assist in troubleshooting issues that may occur during testing. Troubleshooting may involve mechanical issues as well as hydraulic.

  • Assist in training Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and the Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) personnel with familiarization of the GSE hardware.

  • Participate in the acceptance testing of the 5th Self-Propelled Modular Transportation (SPMT) unit which will include the Facility Acceptance Test (FAT) and Site Acceptance Test (SAT). This unit is used in the GSE transportation.

  • Manage the Support Equipment Management System (SEMS) database that contains a list of all the GSE that will be used by the SLS Program.

  • Lead the development/updates of key GSE system engineering products as the book manager. Tasks include:

  • Coordinating updates to the GSE documents as required thru acquiring comments from various GSE team members and NASA leads.

  • Leading task teams to gain concurrence to release the GSE documents on a Change Request (CR).

  • Serving as the Change Package Engineering (CPE) for the CR to baseline the GSE documents.

  • Participate in document & milestone reviews to include major milestones, review flight evaluation plans, and internal products.

  • Ensure that design(s) and operations incorporate good engineering aspects for safety, operations, and logistical supportability. Also work with Human Factors Engineering (HFE) to ensure that good/safe work surroundings and tools can be managed by all.

  • Work closely with NASA Government counterparts, prime contractor personnel, multiple engineering disciplines and various integrated product teams.

  • The selected applicant may travel to NASA and contractor facilities as required to support reviews, meetings, Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs), conferences, training, etc.

Qualifications

Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Systems Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited university is required.Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Masters with at least 8 years of experience, or a BS with at least 10 years of experience.

The candidate is also required to have:

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in systems engineering and integration, launch vehicle definition, functional design, design integration, launch vehicle performance analyses, flight evaluation planning, requirement verification, and/or requirement validation.

  • Experience with developing systems requirements, verification strategies, and verification planning as well as facilitating the successful completion of verification compliance activities.

  • Experience with defining and managing interfaces, interface requirements, and interface verification.

  • Knowledge of component level and integrated systems verification planning as well as experience in developing and delivering briefings to NASA program, test, and verification boards.

  • Familiarity with NASA Systems Engineering policies and procedures related to verification, and have experience using tools/systems to manage verification compliance data.

  • Critical thinking, effective communications, and problem solving skills.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering executive-level briefings, have excellent oral, written, and customer relation skills, and be proficient using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Desired (presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as discriminating factors in selecting applicants):

  • Experience with systems engineering and integration of ground and/or flight hardware.

  • Ground operations experience for Space Shuttle, International Space Station (ISS), or Expendable Launch Vehicle (ELV) programs.

  • Experience in Launch Vehicle Ground Support Equipment (GSE) requirements, implementation, and/or manufacturing.

  • Knowledge of NASA spacecraft, launch vehicles, space launch operations, and flow processes.

  • Knowledge of computer-aided design and drafting software applications. Examples might include PTC Creo (ProE), Solidworks, Catia, etc.

  • Experience with requirements management tools; systems engineering tools; product Development, Design, Test and Evaluation (DDT&E), Engineering Document Management Systems, and unique database tools used during system development.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
