This engineer works in a small team environment, with coordination to larger teams, to plan and perform electrical/electronic system design, integration and test activities in support of the NASA Space Launch System (SLS) Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) labs at Marshall Space Flight center in Huntsville Alabama. The HWIL labs include the Software Integration and Test Facility (SITF), Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL), and multiple Software Development Facilities (SDFs) used to verify the integrated avionics and software systems for the SLS rocket. All of these labs include complex Electrical/Avionics systems operating in a highly integrated environment.

Work will be performed for the Avionics and Ground Systems Test Branch (ES53) of the SLS program at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. This branch is responsible for maintenance, fabrication, integration, operation, assembly, and testing of project hardware and software in support of the noted SLS labs.

Responsibilities:

This position’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Work in a small team environment to plan and perform Electrical/Avionics system integration and test activities for the SIL, SITF, and SDF labs.

  • Aid in the development, integration and testing of the Exploration Upper Stage (EUS) avionics and electrical systems within the various SLS labs.

  • Employ technical problem solving skills to engineer solutions that meet the requirements and needs of our NASA customer.

  • Communicate risks, issues and solutions to peers with various technical backgrounds and areas of expertise.

Qualifications

Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required. Applicants with a degree in a related field from an accredited institution, with a demonstrated foundational understanding of electrical and electronic components & systems (typically achieved through an engineering degree) may be considered.

Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 9 years of experience, Masters with at least 13 years of experience, or BS with at least 15 years of experience.

Requirements and Required Skills:

  • Minimum of 2 years professional experience

  • Must have exposure to the principles of Systems Engineering, and Systems Engineering processes (i.e. the Systems Engineering V diagram).

  • Must have good technical communication skills – must be able to clearly define and describe a technical subject to peers across various engineering disciplines.

Desired experience includes one or more of the following in order of significance:

  • Electrical/Electronic systems and components operational knowledge – including the design, analysis, and simulation of circuits. Component & circuit knowledge should include foundational R/L/C/Diode/BJT/FET components as well as devices such as op-amps, instrumentation amps, opto-isolators, A/Ds, D/As.

  • Avionics Systems design, integration & test for launch vehicles, aircraft, satellites, or payloads. Know how to read and interpret avionics architecture diagrams, cable interconnect diagrams, and associated system schematics.

  • Have, or demonstrate strong willingness to develop, a broad technical capability to integrate real-time HWIL systems. This broad technical capability will range from detailed electronic subsystem and component functional evaluation/analysis/modeling, to large scale complex system level interaction across multiple avionics boxes and electrical/electronic subsystems.

  • Electrical control and electrical power systems design, integration & test for launch vehicles, aircraft, satellites, or payloads.

  • Integration and/or simulation of sensors such as pressure transducers, RTDs, thermocouples, accelerometers, etc.

  • Integration and/or simulation of solenoid valves, servo valves, or electromechanical actuators.

  • Working knowledge of digital communication technologies such as MIL-STD 1553B, RS422, and RS485.

  • Working knowledge of Data Acquisition Systems, preferably real-time systems.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
