JSEG Software Systems Engineer (Entry Level)
The Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) is looking for a Software Engineer to join the Space Systems Department. The selected candidate will be a part of the ES51 Software Systems Engineering Branch that supports multiple NASA programs, including the Space Launch System (SLS), International Space Station (ISS), and Gateway Space Station.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Development and ownership of avionics software requirement specifications through the product life cycle, which may involve performing the following activities - Trade Studies and Analysis, Requirements Definition and Traceability, Requirements Allocation and Verification, Interface Definition, System/Software Integration and test, and Design Verification and Validation.
Coordinating and interfacing with software design and verification teams, project leads, and customers, as well as participating in reviews, meetings (i.e. team/discipline, TIMs, teleconferences, etc.), and working groups.
Support development of Interface Requirement Document(s) (IRD) and Interface Control Document(s) (ICD) to ensure the complete integration of requirements.
Perform thorough technical assessments of proposed parent and interface requirements to understand the impacts imposed by modifications.
Support the Safety office to ensure their requirements are documented and can be met.
Identify and communicate risks to project management.

A degree in Engineering or related field is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred. Typically, educational requirement is a BS.
Required Skills for this position include:
Software engineering skills in the development of avionics system/software requirements.
Experience understanding and navigating UML representations of designs.
Experience with requirement management databases, preferably IBM Rationale DOORS.
Ability to complete tasks with minimal oversight, as well as multi-task and be proactive in between formal assignments.
Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, communication and customer relation skills – must be able to clearly define and describe a technical subject to peers across various engineering disciplines.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and Outlook).
Desired Skills for this position include:
- Previous avionics experience supporting the ISS, Space Shuttle, SLS, or equivalent DoD programs (ex. ECLSS, Flight Computer, GN&C, etc.).
Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must beappropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
