JSEG Systems Engineer – Operations & Integration (Entry Level) (AER0000SK)


The key purpose of the position is to provide support to the Space Launch System Program (SLSP) development, integration, and coordination of SLSP and Element Projects requirements, operations, maintenance, test and checkout. The position provides Systems Engineering expertise relative to launch vehicle ground operations, manufacture, test and support systems.


  • Interface with other SLS engineering disciplines, SLS Program/Project office, SLS Elements, and other NASA Centers to ensure the SLS Program successfully meets the mission objectives.

  • Develop ground operations requirements and procedures, develop ground operations products, develop integration products and agreements, maintain knowledge of requirements and ICD’s, participate in risk identification and development, support test and integration activities, and perform Change Package Engineer (CPE) duties.

  • Participate in working groups, design reviews, Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs), technical performance meetings, teleconferences, other meetings, and document reviews as needed.

  • Travel to NASA and contractor facilities as required supporting, reviews, meetings, TIMs, conferences, etc.

  • Support SLSP Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I) team in all areas associated with launch vehicle operations.

  • Apply knowledge and experience in design, development, test, evaluation, and operations of new, complex systems.

  • Work closely with NASA Government counterparts, prime contractor personnel, multiple engineering disciplines, and various integrated product teams.

  • Participate in document & milestone reviews to include major milestones; review flight evaluation plans, internal products, various SLS-Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I) products.

  • Promote detailed technical coordination within the SLS program (Elements and disciplines), and with external programs and stakeholders.

  • Lead task teams, plan and execute trade studies, collect data from stakeholders, and prepare and present decision packages to engineering leadership and program management.

  • Participate in special studies, trades and review items task teams.

  • Travel as required.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) or related field from an ABET accredited is required. Typically, educational requirement is a BS,with 2 years’ relevant aerospace experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to formulate, assess, and verify requirements.

  • Ability to apply Systems Engineering to complex programs, utilizing Systems Engineering processes and methodologies.

Highly desired experience:

  • Ground operations for a fielded space transportation system.

  • Technical integration of complex aerospace systems or operations engineering during the design, development, test and evaluation (DDT&E) and/or operations phases.

  • Launch Vehicle DDT&E, processing, and/or launch.

  • NASA/contractor environment familiarity.

  • Knowledge of NASA space launch operations and flow processes.

  • Skills, capabilities and knowledge required to interface with program level representatives as well as engineers and other technical personnel designing, developing and delivering spaceflight hardware.

  • Microsoft Office Suite competence (Word, Office, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • Critical thinking, effective communications, and problem solving skills.

  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills.

Preference given to personnel who possess an understanding of the SLS Program and its Elements as well as some knowledge of NASA Systems Engineering policies and procedures, OMRS, WADs, and LCCs.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).


Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
