Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) is comprised of 10 companies and is located at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL (ranked #11 in Best Places to Live by U.S. News). Provide System Engineering (SE) and Mass Properties Engineering expertise relative to in-space vehicles and launch vehicles for the System Analysis Branch (EV74) supporting the Space Launch System (SLS) Program (SLSP).
The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, and customers, as well as participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, and task teams. The candidate will provide leadership and/or support for the development of mass properties assessments for SLS and participate in review of the SLS Element’s mass properties assessments.
The candidate will provide and perform the following tasks:
Lead and support the development and review of key system engineering products for SLSP milestones and provide technical expertise to technical and programmatic reviews.
Create mass properties estimations and provide technical insight, uncertainty analysis, and appraisal of the conservatism used in the specific estimating processes used.
Generate Technical Performance Metric (TPM) charts and mass properties reports which include full dry mass properties (mass, center of gravity, moments of inertia, and products of inertia) and other reports suitable for input into trajectory and G&NC design and analysis assessments.
Perform conceptual mass properties parametric estimations, bottoms-up calculations, mass distributions, moment of inertia calculations, and weight control planning.
Lead and guide the technical integration of the mass properties and integration analysis team products within the team and across affected disciplines such as verification, requirements, loads, GSE, and manufacturing.
Coordinate and collaborate with designers and stress analysts and use expertise to identify areas for potential mass savings in design and manufacturing.
Coordinate and collaborate with stakeholders in the GN&C, operations, and performance disciplines/areas to improve and enhance vehicle performance and operational objectives.
Proactively work to create and implement new processes and tools to facilitate improved design and analysis capabilities.
Perform verification and validation of mass properties report data for the team to ensure accuracy of the input data as well as the output data from the NASA Mass Properties Analysis and Reporting Tool (MPART).
Technically evaluate SLS Prime Contractors mass properties reports and associated data.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering or related technical field is required. Degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Masters with at least 8 total years of relevant experience or a BS with at least 10 total years of relevant experience in systems engineering and integration.
The candidate is required to have:
Experience working with design teams and with system configuration, design, and analysis personnel.
Excellent mathematical skills and the ability to perform analytical assessments of vehicle systems, subsystems, and components is required.
Ability to breakdown complex problems or issues into manageable pieces to facilitate resolution of technical concerns.
Experience using MATLAB and some proficiency creating tools or modifying software applications for a specific use is required.
Critical thinking, effective communications, and problem solving skills are required.
Experience reading and working with engineering drawings, interface control documents, configuration documents, or other technical documentation is required.
Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills are required.
Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
Desired skill sets (presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as discriminating factors in selecting applicants):
Experience working with and understanding of cryogenic and solid fuel, and other fluid mass properties management is highly desired.
Experience leading and/or working as a member of mass properties and weight integration teams is highly desired.
Experience using computer aided design tools (i.e. Pro-E/CREO) and database applications is desired.
An understanding of the NASA/contractor environment, NASA systems engineering processes, and familiarity with the SLS Program is desired.

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Some travel to other NASA Centers and customer locations will be required (nominally 0 to 20%, depending on project requirements.)
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
