Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) is comprised of 10 companies and is located at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL (ranked #11 in Best Places to Live by U.S. News). A Project Engineer with systems engineering skill sets and spacecraft and/or launch vehicle experience is needed to support the Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in the Science and Technology Office. The project is completing the formulation stage and entering execution of defined plans.
This position is an immediate need that will support the MAV Project Office as they complete the formulation stage and begin executing the project. Specific responsibilities include:
Provide systems technical management expertise related to the Mars Ascent Vehicle.
Provide technical support in developing milestones and schedules associated with such systems, and ensuring milestones and schedules are met.
Help ensure project stays within budget and understand technical and programmatic risks.
Provide project management support related to the development and management of hardware contracts.
Systems management support also includes technical support and review of technical mission objectives, mission planning, development of concept and configuration alternatives, optimization and trade studies involving technical, cost, schedule, and their associated risks with safety, affordability, reliability, needs-assessment, and metrics reporting.
Degree in Engineering or related field is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 14 years of experience, Masters with at least 18 years of experience, or BS with at least 20 years of experience.
Required experience and skills include:
Minimum of 15-18 years experience related to launch vehicle/spacecraft systems.
Thorough understanding of potential issues associated with launch vehicle and spacecraft systems development, to include design, fabrication, and test.
Experience in technical planning/management utilizing various systems management tools, including Microsoft Project and others.
Experience with Project Management principles in accordance with NPR 7120.5.
Knowledgeable about MSFC capabilities related to key launch vehicle development milestones, MSFC’s reporting, and MWI 7100.1 gate reviews.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the capability to represent MSFC’s work related to launch vehicles.
Experience in NASA’s procurement processes and the management of hardware contracts.
Desired experience and capabilities include:
Ability to build partnerships and work collaboratively with others.
Strong organizational skills and ability to work on several tasks at one time.
Systems Engineering experience on a NASA spacecraft, launch vehicle or science based project.

General office environment (100%). Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines:
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions:
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
