Engineering Assistant


This is an engineering assistant position withinthe JWSG Technical Services Department for the NASA Test and Evaluationcontract, it may be assigned to Jacobs Technology Inc. or a teammatecompany.Thisis a Modified Full Time position.

Duties include theidentification and specification of materials of construction forcomponents, sub units, or simple models utilized in theconstruction or build-up of test systems within the test facility.May troubleshoot and correct operationalprocedures to build or obtain materials of construction prior to schedulingcomponent build up.Follows specificlayout and scientific diagrams to construct and package simple materials forcomponents and subsystems.Conductsvarious test or experiments which may require minor database modifications orprocedures as well as subjective judgments in measurements; material kit selectionsets and operates standard inventory equipment and records material test orother material specification data.Extractsand compiles a variety of engineering data from field notes, manual, labreports, etc., processes data, identifying errors of inconsistencies; selectsmethods of data presentation.Assists indesign modification by compiling data related to design, specifications, andmaterials that are pertinent to specific items of equipment or component parts.Develops information concerning previousoperational failures and modifications. Uses judgement and initiative torecognize inconsistencies or gaps in data and seek sources to clarify information.Attention to detail must be taken to accurately read printouts, schematics andvarious forms of data, purchases required materials of construction and assistsengineering personnel.Failure toaccurately record and report data can jeopardize operations and invalidatecritical data.Receives initial instructions, equipment requirements, anddirection from engineering personnel.Performs recurring work independently; work is reviewed for technicaladequacy.


Two (2) years of college with courses in computer science,mathematics, or related engineering courses, plus two (2) years of relatedexperience in data reduction and analysis, or any equivalent combination ofrelevant education and experience for a total of four (4) years.

Essential Functions:


Positioninvolves extended periods of sitting or standing. Physical requirements are:sitting, walking and standing. Typicallyrequired to lift and hold up to 25 pounds. Position is located on a hazardous testing facility; must be able to quickly evacuate buildings in the eventof an emergency.


Desk/office work and occasionally test area work. Test area work involves standing working withother technical personnel and involves working inside clean areas. All work must be completed in a safe mannerin accordance with NASA and Company safety standards.


Computer workrequired. Employee will not operate equipment and machines involved in theperformance of testing; union personnel perform these tasks. However, personnel in this job will workaround pressurized fluid systems (nitrogen, air, water) and systems used forprocessing oxygen and hypergolic propellant components. Use ofcalculator, printer, scanner, telephone, filing cabinets, office softwaresuites, and other basic measuring equipment is required.


Regular attendance and punctuality is required. Overtime may be required in support of testproject schedules or other priority assignments as determined by management orcustomer needs. Schedule my include 27to 30 hours per week with some flexibility based on pre-approval. A condensed work schedule, allowing alternateFridays off, is typically in use for each two week pay cycle.


Knowledge of Microsoft programs such as Word, and Excel is necessary, must be able to communicate effectively with individuals at all technicallevels of the organization. Must workwell under pressure to meet deadline requirements. Dress must be appropriate for the positionand not pose a safety risk or hazard to the employee or others in accordancewith NASA and Company policies. Must beable to pass a physical examination (including drug testing) as determined bythe NASA White Sands Test Facility and the Company for the job classification. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’slicense. Must be a U.S Citizen. Must pass a Federal backgroundinvestigation. Must maintain site accesto NASA facilities and computer systems.
