About the opportunity:

Job Purpose / Overview

Sizewell C (SZC) is a proposed new nuclear station that is being developed with a target to take Final Investment Decision in 2022. Providing 7% of the UK’s current demand with reliable low carbon electricity, the SZC project will have a big impact in the drive to reduce carbon emissions in the UK.

The role is within the Cost Estimate team, in the SZC Finance Directorate. Developing a robust cost estimate for the construction of SZC is critical to supporting the case being made for SZC to the UK Government and investors. As a ‘second of a kind’ project, SZC will be a copy of the new nuclear plant currently being built by EDF and CGN at Hinkley Point C (HPC) and has a unique opportunity to leverage the experience built there in order to bring cost savings.

This individual will report directly to the Construction Cost Estimate Programme Manager and will be responsible for providing support across the team including producing cost analysis, creating presentations, supporting the cost estimate engagement with the UK government and their advisors and collaborating with other Project Teams (including Financing & Economic Regulation, Supply Chain, Engineering & Delivery) on cross cutting assignments.

Contextual Information

As part of our plan to secure a low-carbon energy future, the Client is leading the way in building a fleet of safe, reliable nuclear power stations in the UK. Together with our partner China General Nuclear, we are now developing proposals to build and operate a new power station on the Suffolk coast, known as Sizewell C (SZC).

The SZC Project Team is a growing, diverse and collaborative organisation committed to engaging stakeholders, obtaining development consent and preparing the project for the start of construction. SZC Engineering is an integral part of this team, responsible for delivering ‘next of a kind’ savings and finding innovative solutions to the challenges posed by such a complex engineering project.

Our mission is to develop the design of the plant, finalise the construction plan, build relationships with stakeholders and support all the necessary consent and licence applications. The Cost Estimate Team is responsible for the construction cost estimate of the project and its progressive development as the project matures to FID.

Framework & Boundaries

The cost estimate team is looking to recruit a junior member of the team with some experience in the analysis and presentation of cost data who is willing to support a wide variety of work across the team. The team is organised to address the following workstreams:

  • Estimate Development – leading and coordinating the required full estimate updates in line with the developing project design & contracting strategy. The team includes a lead for each major scope area.

  • Data, Analysis & Reporting – including the alignment of data structures, systems and processes, defining the reports/ dashboards and analysis required in close collaboration with the Programme Directors and Project Controls.

  • Stakeholder Engagement – managing the stakeholder links, providing supporting material & analysis for discussions with and decisions of internal stakeholders (SZC Executive, the Client & the Client S.A.) and external stakeholders (UK government and their advisors).

Each of these areas requires support in content creation, managing emerging requests, liaising with key stakeholders and preparing materials.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Data and analytical support to the Estimate Leads.

  • Assist with preparation of presentations to internal and external stakeholders (including shareholders and the UK government).

  • Assist with the preparation of cost analysis as required to meet emerging requests from key stakeholders

  • Support the consolidation of estimate information (including the baseline, assumptions, scope and quantities information), ensuring a high level of auditability is maintained.

  • Support the external review/verification of the SZC cost estimate including Client group audits, UK government and investor due diligence.

  • Help with quality assurance of estimates, reports & presentations prior to external issue (arithmetic checks, English language proof reading, cross checking with other source to maintain ‘single version of the truth’).

  • Maintaining strong links with Project Controls and Finance & Economic Regulation teams for monthly reporting, key enablers self-assessment and other cross cutting requirements.

  • Manage and monitor delivery of any action points identified during meetings.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Essential:

  • Strong numerical and financial modelling skills

  • Experience in handling and analysing large data sets

  • Proven ability to build effective working level relationships across functions including at a senior level

  • Excellent communication skills including in visual presentations (eg powerpoint), with the ability to analyse and present information clearly and persuasively

  • Ability to take a pro-active, flexible, business focused approach in delivery of the role

  • Flexible approach with a willingness to develop knowledge and skills in different aspects of the project

  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and work on several workstreams concurrently

  • MS Office – proficient user

  • English language – fluent written & verbal

Desirable

  • Strong degree (multiple disciplines are relevant)

  • Experience using tools such as CostOS (cost estimating system) and PowerBI

  • French language – fluent written & verbal
