Principal Structural Engineer


Throughthe operational review of buildings a number of business improvementinitiatives have been identified. Onesuch initiative is the introduction of discipline teams to support growthwithin a scalable structure and provide effective line management. The introduction of discipline teams isdesigned to replicate middle management responsibilities across a number ofteams, and facilitate the delegation of line management responsibilities with atarget ratio of 1:6. The role of PrincipalEngineer is born out of this initiative, and provides a management steppingstone for technical leaders of the future.

Function and Scope

The Principal Structural Engineerwill play a role in providing design leadership and discipline integration ofprojects delivered by the built Environment business. Using technicalexperience and excellent people skills, the Principal Engineer will manageprojects and guide / mentor less experienced structural engineers to producedesigns and associated deliverables for projects. The role will provide aclient facing lead for projects and ensure that Jacobs maintains the highesttechnical standards, levels of service and quality.

Main Responsibilities

As amember of the regional multi-disciplinary design team, a Principal Engineerplays a crucial role in the delivery of technical solutions, acting in supportof the Team Principal, balancing commercial, technical and mentoringresponsibilities. A Principal Engineerwill be responsible for:

  • The delivery of technical outputs of projects and the seamless sharing of information with other discipline teams;

  • Ensuring technical quality through implementation of best practice and continuous improvement processes;

  • Representing Jacobs in liaising with clients, architects and other design team members;

  • Develop and maintaining excellent client relationships through successful project execution;

  • Develop talent bycoaching and mentoring less experienced staff and supporting their technicalcareer development aspirations;

  • Management of project resources and reporting to the Team Principal;

  • Management of engineers within the team with a range of skills and experience;

  • Assisting in the preparation of technical and commercial bid proposals.

Communications and WorkingRelationships

The PrincipalEngineer will cooperate and work closely with other members of themulti-disciplinary team members of regional teams across the UK and within theEuropean Technical Network.

Externally aPrincipal Engineer is expected to work closely with external organisationswithin a project team and with our clients through all stages of ourrelationship with them.

  • Leading technical delivery of a number of projects and supervise team members

  • Take financial responsibility for projects

  • Take technical responsibility for team activities and sign off designs in accordance with QA and other procedures

  • Leading the design and specification for a variety of projects using a range of structural engineering software including Fastrak Building Designer, Orion, TEDDS and S-Frame

  • Contribute to design projects across offices and internationally where required

  • Application of industry standard design and calculation software

  • Preparation of reports, drawings and specifications

  • Representation of the discipline and Jacobs at internal and external meetings Project management of suitable projects

  • Manage other engineers and designers

  • Monitoring and reporting progress against time and financial objectives

  • Compliance with design and QA procedures

  • Monitoring of installation works on site and observance of technical compliance and H&S matters

  • Develop and maintaining excellent client relationships through business development activities and project execution

  • Assisting in the preparation of technical and commercial bid proposal


  • Proven ability to lead a team of engineers, liaising directly with clients, architects and other design team members.

  • Demonstrable experience of delivering a range of projects from concept through completion and delivering client satisfaction

  • Experience in the design and specification of building structures in steel, concrete, masonry and timber to British Standards and Eurocodes

  • Ability to implement the use 3D structural analysis and CSC design software on projects.

  • Demonstrable experience of leading projects of varying scale and complexity and project teams within discipline

  • Able to gain the confidence of and influence clients and other team members in the area of technical expertise and a proven ability to represent Jacobs at external meetings

  • Competent user of Microsoft Office software including Word and Excel

  • Familiar with UK Building Regulations and design standards for discipline

  • Committed to sustainable design with knowledge of current techniques and technologies as applied to own discipline


  • Experience of multi-disciplinary and/or multi-office project execution

  • Business development experience

  • Experience in mentoring staff in professional development

  • Background Knowledge of Autocad or Revit software

  • Full driving licence

  • Able to obtain security clearance for selected projects

  • Degree qualified in appropriate subject or equivalent

  • Chartered Engineer and member of either the ICE or IStructE.
