Our Environment, Maritime and Resilience business provides a focus for advising our clients on sustainability issues including Clean Air Zones (CAZ), air quality, renewable energy, low carbon economies, impacts of climate change and waste and resource management. Our environmental capabilities comprise of in excess of 1000 staff based predominantly in the UK, but with reach into the Middle East and in India.

Primary Job Responsibilities

As a JacobsTechnical Director in Air Quality you will be joining a successful and dynamic group, leading an existing teams with specialists across the UK on primarily road related air quality projects. You will be reporting to the Air Quality lead for the UK. Duties associated with this post will include:

  • Leading and mentoring a team of Air Quality specialists working on a wide variety of projects.

  • Technical lead for air quality and odour projects including large infrastructure projects.

  • Supporting and developing the national team’s business strategy.

  • Provide robust technical advice to clients on compliance with environmental regulations and issues related to Environmental Impact Assessment and Permitting.

  • Work closely with client’s technical specialists to incorporate detailed aspects of scheme, plant or process design within environmental assessments.

  • Maintain our high quality of environmental deliverables whilst working within project budgets and timescales.

  • Support, develop and maintain relationships with key public and private sector clients.



  • A good degree qualification in a relevant environmental/natural science or engineering discipline.

  • Candidates should have chartered membership of a recognised professional institution.

  • Proven ability to use Air Quality models (such as ADMS, ADMS-Roads, Aermod, AirViro and CALPUFF) – this must include ADMS-Roads.

  • An excellent understanding of environmental regulations and relevant UK technical guidance including the DMRB, LAQM Technical Guidance and relevant documents from the IAQM and EPUK.

  • Proven UK experience in Air Quality assessment work. This will include Air Quality Assessments for some or all of the following: industrial sites, road transport schemes and Local Air Quality Management.

  • Experience of planning and implementing air quality and odour monitoring.

  • Proven ability to work within large multidisciplinary teams.

  • A track record in successful business development and /or the management of air quality teams.

  • Highly proficient in the use of standard office software (Word / Excel / Powerpoint).

  • Proven ability to conduct technical work within budgetary and time constraints.

  • Experience working to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards.


Detailed understanding of wider infrastructure and technical professional services business.

Ideally have experience in providing evidence at public inquirys and appeals Experience working across multiple business sectors and international projects.

  • Experience of working on major road schemes.

  • The candidate should be willing to work out of other Jacobs offices and at client sites in the UK as required.

  • A full UK driving license would be preferred.

  • Able to develop Excel based spreadsheet solutions to efficiently manipulate large and complex datasets, including use of VBA.

  • Experience working with GIS packages and statistical software (such as the Openair package in R).

  • A detailed understanding of the output from macro- and micro-simulation traffic models and methods for manipulation of data.
