Jacobs Strategic Consulting includes over 800 staff providing solutions to clients investing in, planning, constructing, operating and maintaining assets in the buildings and infrastructure sectors. Within Strategic Consulting, the Rail Advisory team provides specialist technical advice to public and private sector clients, including demand and revenue forecasting, operations planning, performance modelling, due diligence and business case development.
We are a leading consultancy in the UK rail industry. We provide a range of high quality services for a range of public and private sector clients such as government departments, owning groups, train operating companies and investors. Our work includes the development of timetables and operational solutions to deliver major infrastructure projects and upgrades in the UK and around the world. We are at the forefront of helping to deliver rail reform in the UK and working with the Department for Transport to define the specification and evaluation of rail services in a post-franchise environment.
About the opportunity
We have a variety of rail projects including a growing and exciting portfolio of major engineering projects across the globe. As a result of this growth, we are seeking a talented Senior Rail Operations Consultant with several years of relevant experience to join our Rail Advisory team. We are looking for a proficient and credible railway operations individual with previous experience of working on rail planning projects, an interest in the rail industry and the drive to learn, expand areas of expertise and progress quickly.
The successful candidate will:
Provide technical support to major projects and lead on train planning and operations workstreams in small to medium sized projects;
Prepare technical reports for public and private sector clients;
Provide technical supervision and guidance to staff;
Attend client meetings and participate in the presentation of work
Predominantly work in the UK but also overseas when required;
Pro-actively develop skills both on the job and from formal training and share knowledge with colleagues; and
Assist in the preparation of bids and marketing.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
A thorough practical understanding of rail industry operational planning techniques including a detailed knowledge of timetable planning and one of rolling stock diagramming, train crew diagramming, train crew rostering and performance simulation;
Previous experience of undertaking capacity assessments and analysis;
A sound understanding of how operational planning fits within the wider railway industry;
Practical experience in the use of at least two of the following rail industry operational planning packages:
Train planning system (preferred) such as ATTUne, VoyagerPlan, TPS;
A good overall knowledge and understanding of the GB rail network including a detailed technical knowledge of the characteristics of at least one of Network Rail’s Routes;
Experienced user of spreadsheets;
Experience of producing high quality technical reports for public and/or private sector clients;
A keen interest in the rail industry; and
An ability to work effectively as part of a team and to share ideas and expertise with team members to support ongoing learning and improvement.
Membership of the Institution of Railway Operators (MIRO);
An appreciation of and ideally experience in running MOIRA;
An understanding of rail industry cost drivers;
An understanding of the fundamentals of track layout design along with signalling principles;
Experience of undertaking performance modelling;
Some previous experience of leading technical workstreams or managing projects with a large technical component; and
Some experience of providing analytical support in rail business models; including crowding, operating costs, performance and business case.
