About the opportunity:
Within Peoples & Places Solutions, Jacobs’ Smart Places team is a dynamic, close-knit team of people who share a passion for using their expertise and the potential of digital technologies to create better places. We are a multi-disciplinary team and work on a wide variety of projects from individual smart buildings to neighbourhood-scale developments and city-wide strategies in the UK, Europe and the Middle East. We collaborate with colleagues in many disciplines, from urban design to economics and from social value to infrastructures such as energy and transport. We work in many sectors from local and national government to retail and from aviation to leisure and entertainment. As our business in this exciting sector grows, we are looking for a Senior Technical Consultant to help us deliver these exciting projects.
Key Requirements
Specific responsibilities of the role will include:
Supporting, managing or leading smart city related technology development projects at both initial design and implementation stages, for example, developing smart city frameworks and strategies, designing and integrating different smart city solutions of various disciplines, or preparing design schemes and technical specifications for tendering
Supporting business development of smart city opportunities at both advisory and engineering levels
Working closely with various subject matter specialists and domain experts on implementation and management of different smart city strategies and applications
Managing the interface of clients from both public and private sectors, technology suppliers and other partners, for example consultants and utility bodies
Here’s What You’ll Need:
We are looking for candidates with the following professional and personal skills:
Relevant experience in tackling multidisciplinary consultancy or service projects that cross the boundaries between the traditional engineering and other disciplines, such as IT, urban planning, and engineering
Preferably a member of a relevant professional institution(s) e.g. IET, BCS, IHE, IAM, or alternatively able to demonstrate comparable professional experience
Good at all forms of communication, including reports, presentations, workshops and meetings
Ability to effectively translate and communicate complex technical terms with a non-technical senior client audience
Project management, commercial awareness and stakeholder engagement
Capable of working on several projects at the same time and able to prioritise their activities
Must be a “details” person as well as being able work well with colleagues
Willing to work internationally in Europe and Middle East
Finally, it is critical that candidates should be passionate about creating better, smarter places, enabled by technology
Technical/Qualifications
We are particularly looking for candidates with the following domain skills:
Practical/demonstrable experience of delivering smart / digital strategies, with particular focus on the definition of technical solutions, information and operational systems and connectivity and data infrastructure for buildings, cities, regions, developments and communities.
Practical experience in developing and specifying relevant smart place architecture and technologies (such as smart city and smart building platforms, 4G / 5G, fibre and IoT communications, data centres, IoT technologies, AR/VR, big data / analytics, green and sustainability technologies etc.)
Experience of developing strategies, requirements, plans, designs, service designs and architectures for operational technology deployments
Experience of leading or supporting technical proposals and delivering projects for organisations in relevant sectors, including national or local government and transport bodies, property and infrastructure companies, planning and urban design or the utilities sector
Experience working with transport, energy, construction, planners, and other built environment professions, and in particular coordinating the integration of smart elements into their infrastructure plans and strategies.
Experience and knowledge of innovation processes would be a bonus
Candidates will preferably hold a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or related disciplines, and be a member of a relevant industry body; or should alternatively be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and expertise.
