Our Ground Engineering and Tunnelling team provides technical support to a wide range of infrastructure projects throughout the UK, and worldwide. As a result we're looking for people who have the passion and drive to be involved with major geotechnical projects across a range of sectors: Rail, Highways, Utilities and Nuclear.

We are seeking a Tunnel Engineer to be based in our London Office to undertake tunnel design work for a range of interesting projects throughout the UK. Our tunnels team focusses on a range of small to large scale projects from pipejack undercrossings of railway infrastructure to complex underground caverns utilising techniques from empirical methods to 3D FE analyses. Work undertaken can be structural and/or geotechnical in nature.

Job responsibilities

The candidate will work within project teams and will report to team leaders and project managers. The priorities of the role are likely to include:

  • Preparation of designs and drawings

  • Consultation with clients and stakeholders

  • Quality control and checking responsibilities

  • Writing technical reports

  • Managing task budgets on behalf of project managers     

Qualifications

Candidates will have a first degree (MEng or BEng) in civil engineering or a very closely related subject alongside engineering design experience and knowledge of the tunnelling industry. You will be working towards Chartered status with the ICE or an appropriate professional body.

The ideal candidate should possess and be able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge.

  • A sound academic knowledge of civil/tunnel engineering

  • Some knowledge of relevant European codes and standards

  • Strong communication skills with fluency in verbal and written English

  • Numerate

  • Computer literate in MS Office package (or similar) and relevant discipline software such as Plaxis

  • Problem solving & analysis skills

  • Team player but with an ability to work independently when required

  • Planning & organisational skills

  • Motivated to deliver high quality

  • Commitment to professional and personal development leading towards chartered status
