Jacobs is seeking a Staff Design Structural Engineer to support the Civil Engineering Operations program at MacDill Air Force Base.

Program Mission:

The Department of the Air Force 6th Contracting Squadron at MacDill Air Force Base, FL has a continuing requirement for base civil engineering services. This includes base operations support, engineering, management, maintenance and repair of facilities and infrastructure systems, construction management, minor construction, emergency management and response, environmental requirements and programs, real property management; material procurement and management, Civil Engineer (CE) deployment training and management and exercise support.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The structural engineer plans, designs, and reviews plans for erection of structures requiring stress analysis. Designs structure to meet estimated load requirements, computing size, shape, strength, and type of structural members, or performs structural analysis of plans and structures prepared by others.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform analysis and prepare structural designs and specifications for a wide range of facility projects using structural analysis software and AutoCAD.

  • Assess structural condition of facilities to develop recommendations for necessary repairs and modifications.

  • Compose technical correspondence to communicate designs, plans and objectives to management officials, staff, and customers.

  • Review designs of projects prepared by in-house designers, AE firms, or Design-Build firms for completeness, technical adequacy, functional design, sound engineering practice, and compliance with applicable design criteria.

  • Ensure that the structural aspects of the project are constructed in accordance with contract plans and specifications.

  • Provide structural engineering support to active construction projects including the following activities; submittal review, respond to RFIs, quality assurance site visits and inspections, commissioning, and project closeout

  • Lifting: Up to 50 lbs.: 10%

  • Special clothing/equipment (wearing): may be required to wear PPE – steel toed shoes, safety glasses and vest when entering construction sites. 20%

  • Unusual physical requirements: Sitting (50%), Standing (30%), Bending (10%), stooping (10%)

  • High noise level: Active Air Force Base 20%

Description of Work Environment:

  • Work is primarily indoors in an office setting – 70%

  • Inspections and surveys are outside – 30%

  • Extreme (hot/cold) temperatures involved: 20%

  • Hazardous conditions - Exposure to work sites 20%

  • Travel/transportation requirements: May require occasional local travel - 10%

Equipment and Machines Involved in Work Tasks:

  • Computers, fax machines, copiers, cell phones, and video conferencing - 100%

Criticality of Attendance:

  • Work hours are normally 8 hours per day and 5 days per week, Monday-Friday. Regular attendance of scheduled hours is extremely important. Punctuality and regular attendance are necessary. Must have flexibility of workdays to cover weekends if required.

  • Necessity for regular attendance: Critical, 100%

  • Urgency for punctuality: Critical, 100%

Other Essential Functions:

Must complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, and background check.

Must be a US Citizen.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOD SECRET Security Clearance.

Here’s what you’ll need :

Required Education / Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from a program certified by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or in architecture from a program certified by the National Architecture Accrediting Board (NAAB)

  • Must be a US citizen.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.

  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in buildings related structural design.

  • Proficiency with structural design and analysis software (e.g., ETABS, RISA, RAM)

  • Thorough knowledge of building codes and standards (e.g., IBC, ASCE) including lateral load (e.g., seismic, wind) development

  • Experience with construction support services for building projects

  • Desire to take independent initiative and ownership of work, and an eagerness to learn

  • Experience with Federal (DoD, Federal Civilian, or Defense Contractor) projects

  • Familiarity with Design-Build or Early Contractor Involvement project delivery

  • Hold and maintain Secret Clearance

Certificate / License / Registration:

  • Professional registration as an engineer and licensed in one of the States or US territories

  • Valid Driver’s License
