About the opportunity:

Within our Water and Environment business our Energy team advises clients on the challenges and opportunities regarding decarbonisation/net zero and sustainability issues specifically in relation to requirements for delivering the global energy transition. This includes decentralised, decarbonised generation and management, innovation in technologies and energy sources, as well as policy and regulatory support.

We are currently seeking a hydrogen technical consultant to expand our team to help deliver continued growth in our services and greater value to our client’s requirements. A key element of this is being at the forefront of dynamic change, in terms of energy generation, management and distribution.

The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of hydrogen projects in an engineering or consulting environment, including experience of hydrogen production technologies and their applications. A technical understanding of how this relates to project development and integration of hydrogen solutions with the rest of the energy system will also be beneficial.

The successful candidate will also be able to work collaboratively with our operations and sales teams to provide client focus and support, innovative solutions to clients most challenging problems, connect and nurture our technical resources and evolve a hydrogen/alternative energy technical practice that is future ready.

It is not essential that your background is in the Power or Energy sectors, as we recognise that hydrogen is an evolving sector and that key resources may transition from other industries to participate in the evolving hydrogen sector.

The Role

In your role, you’ll provide engineering consultancy support and leadership across of a range of hydrogen and fuel cell opportunities including production and storage, distribution and export, end user infrastructure (transport and power generation) and hydrogen hubs/valleys/clusters.

To support these services, you’ll contribute to a range of activities from feasibility studies, business case analysis and design through to the preparation of technical specifications and procurement support.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the delivery of consultancy projects, delivering on time and to budget

  • Actively participating in client engagement and business development opportunities in pursuit of future work for the business

  • Development and support to business cases or hydrogen strategies (linked to net zero strategies or transport/energy strategies)

  • Esuring concept and detailed designs meet client scoping requirements and compliance with their technical specifications

  • Conducting engineering reviews, quality assurance checks and approval of design drawings, reports, construction programmes and other deliverables

  • Acting as main point of contact with the client during the various design phases.

  • Carrying out system design studies

  • Support the wider energy consulting team on projects on low carbon energy systems, energy storage and strategy development

Here’s What You’ll Need:

You need to enjoy working in a dynamic team environment and where necessary using your expertise to guide other members of staff. You’ll also require the ability to lead bid preparation, deliver to tight timescales, be technically accurate and to manage a number of schemes simultaneously, either as the lead or as part of a team. Strong verbal and written communication skills, and excellent quantitative and problem-solving skills are essential as part of this role.

  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or Masters in Engineering

  • Membership of an Engineering Institution

  • Working knowledge of hydrogen production, storage, distribution and utilization

  • An understanding of energy policy & innovation

  • Working knowledge of hydrogen projects in an engineering or consulting environment

  • Proven track record of delivering innovative solutions
