About The Opportunity

Our Energy Transmission and Distribution (T&D) team has several frameworks with various UK and international T&D clients undertaking outline and detailed design of a wide range of projects including new and modified substations, overhead line upgrades/diversions/new builds and cable connections. A growing workload has given rise to a vacancy for a Lead Civil Engineer.

You will be working within a multidisciplinary project environment and be responsible for leading a team of Civil Engineers to support our T&D design projects.

This is a key position which will suit an experienced Civil Engineer who can demonstrate strong technical and interpersonal skills combined with commercial awareness and the ability to play their part as part of a growing team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Produces deliverables for which they are responsible (design hypotheses, methodology and assumption notes; technical specifications; calculation notes).

  • Perform technical verifications of civil engineering designs, models, and drawings.

  • Contribute to CDM reviews, create, and maintain the Design Risk Register.

  • Client Relationship Management at all levels in client organisations.

  • Liaise with subject matter experts in the wider Energy team such as HV Plant, Protection & Control, Cables, and Project Management.

  • Interfacing with other Jacobs engineering disciplines such as geotechnical, structures, environmental engineers, and highways.

  • Liaise with our Global Integrated Design (GID) colleagues.

  • Liaison with clients, contractors and third parties.

Here’s What You’ll Need:


  • MEng, BEng or equivalent accredited degree in Civil Engineering

  • Chartered Civil Engineer Status (CEng) with a recognised Professional Institution

  • Experience of civil engineering design on Energy and Infrastructure projects in Electricity Transmission and Distribution, including HV substations

  • Experience of Safety in Design and Designers responsibilities under the CDM Regs

  • Proven ability to work as part of a team, liaising directly with clients and other design team members

  • Must be motivated to progress your own career as well as promoting Jacobs

  • Good communication skills with experience in report writing and presentations

  • Capable of managing a challenging workload subject to change at short notice

  • Experience in working with Eurocodes, British Standards and have knowledge of the guidance available from industry research bodies such as CIRIA, Concrete Council etc.

  • Experienced in the design, detailing and specification of Reinforced Concrete, Structural Steel

  • Experienced in working with Industry civil technical specifications

  • Experienced in the scoping and management of surveys and investigations

  • Conducting engineering reviews, quality assurance checks and approval of design drawings, reports, construction programmes and other deliverables

IT Skills Required:

  • Conversant with the use of civil and structural engineering software for analysis, design, and integrated modelling

  • Experienced in the development of and be able to interrogate spreadsheets for design and programming purposes

  • Familiar with production of drawings using AutoCAD packages (not in a user capacity)

  • Familiar with Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the software associated to make it achievable
