Jacobs Principal OLE Design Engineer in Manchester, United Kingdom

Your Impact:

About the opportunity

Owing to a significant increase in our secured works throughout 2022 and beyond we are looking to enhance our national overhead line design function. Reporting to the OLE Operational Lead you will produce, check and validate OLE designs for Jacobs and other clients.

You will also provide technical consultancy services for clients and provide close support to the other engineering leads and disciplines.

The office location for this role may be either York, Manchester or Birmingham. However, the intention is for time to be split between office and home working and as such applications from candidates based in other locations are welcome.

The aspiration is for this role to have line management of 1 or 2 design engineers, with further direct reports added in the near future as the team grows. The role will require leadership and guidance of other junior members of the Jacobs OLE team both in the UK and Globally.


  • CRE and Lead Designer duties for OLE design schemes

  • Delivery and management of the production of OLE design submissions including OLE Layout Plans, Cross Sections, Allocations, Isolation Diagrams updates, bonding designs, and supporting reports and calculations.

  • Ensuring designs are delivered in line with relevant, current design standards, are constructable, and apply Safe by Design principles.

  • Lead the presentation of designs you are responsible for to other disciplines and to the client’s engineering teams through IDCs and other design reviews meetings.

  • Line management of junior members of staff. Developing the skills and knowledge base in Jacobs’ OLE design team.

  • Providing technical support to multi-disciplinary and electrification projects

  • Engaging with clients at all levels

Here’s What You’ll Need:

About you

The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate the following:

  • Proven experience in OLE Design within the UK

  • Interpersonal, communication and influencing skills

  • Verbal communication skills: able to present and discuss designs with clients and other stakeholders in IDCs and Progressive Design Reviews.

  • Experienced in OLEMI and other OLE ranges i.e. UKMS, Mk3B, ATF, UK1.

  • Written skills: able to structure a technical design report.

  • Familiar with Isolation/section diagrams and their update process

  • Understanding of Earthing & Bonding required for electrification

  • Understanding of Network Rail GRIP and PACE processes

  • Customer and Delivery Focused

  • Desire to train and mentor more junior members of the OLE design team

  • IT skills including Microsoft Office and ProjectWise applications

  • BIM knowledge and an aptitude in MicroStation desirable

  • Demonstrable experience of implementing innovation within the OLE design process desirable

Qualifications & Experience:


  • Degree/HNC or relevant experience.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Previous Design CRE Roles


  • Chartered Engineer or working toward it.
