This is a union position: Performs stationary engineering duties for high pressure steam boiler and steam generated vacuum system. Assists other mechanics in the preparation/setup, operation, and maintenance of supported systems and Arc-Jet facilities used for materials testing. Operates central console systems to allow facilities to function. Performs some installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair activities. Operates mechanical tools such as a drill press, power hacksaw, band saw, shears, pipe threaders and grinders. Operates small power tools including air wenches, drills, grinders, etc. Lays out and builds complex tubing systems using flaring machines and tubing benders. Disassembles, repairs, reassembles, and verifies various types of valves, valve operators, and pressure regulators. Must be familiar with the operating environment to ensure hardware materials are compatible with flow media properties including pressure and temperature. Operates, maintains, and calibrates pressure relief valves and instrumentation as required. Performs general maintenance on compressors and accessories, heat exchangers, and pumps. Performs inspection and evaluation of mechanical equipment and facility operating systems. Makes recommendations related to maintenance and repair of same. There are specific minimum physical, work environment, and equipment requirements for this position.

Works from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, cranes, suspended platforms or cages, etc.
Works while bending, standing, stooping, kneeling, or in a prone position for extended time periods.
Works in closely confined spaces.
Lifts and carries items up to 50 pounds, sometimes up and down stairways, where lifting devices and hoists are not available.
Pushes and pulls heavy objects.
Ability to use hearing and vision protection and respiratory equipment.
Description of Work Environment
Works in a hazardous, high noise, high heat environment with exposed hot surfaces and live steam lines.
Work indoors and out in high and low temperatures and in all types of weather conditions.
Work in dusty, noisy, hot, high humidity, dirty, and greasy environment.
Work in areas where there may be materials that are irritating to eyes, nose, throat, and skin requiring the use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
Work with other personnel in a group that is Team Oriented.
Accept and work within established policies and procedures pertaining to company rules and regulations.
Equipment and Machines Involved in Work Tasks
High pressure steam boilers
Man-lifts, such a JLG, scissors-lift, etc.
Mechanical, electrical and pneumatic hand tools
Criticality of Attendance
8 hours per day, 5 days per week Mon – Fri. Work hours are 6:30 am to 3:00 pm. Overtime is sometimes necessary to support meetings, test schedules, and test operations. Testing may occur any day or time of day depending on the schedule and test requirements. Regular daily attendance is required to maintain team effectiveness.
Other Essential Functions
Must be able to obtain a NASA badge, gain access to the facilities, and pass a Security Clearance if required by the employer.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
A. Journeyman Level with related education or work experience (typically 3 or more years) as an operating or stationary engineer. Thorough practical knowledge of operating large mechanical systems and facility components with some theoretical background. Thorough understanding of high-pressure boilers and associated auxiliary equipment. Some knowledge/experience using computer-based controls.
B. Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of hazardous facilities.
C. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from engineers and supervisor.
D. Ability to troubleshoot circuitry utilizing knowledge and experience to provide maximum efficiency.
E. Ability to use own judgment and decisions to allow continuity of workflow.
F. Must be self-motivated and a team player with good interpersonal and communication skills.
G. Must be able to organize time and assignments to properly prioritize efforts for maximum effectiveness.
H. Must have experience with computers using Microsoft Office or equivalent.
