This is an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Machinist to work at NASA’s Ames UPWT Research Facility. You will be working alongside and be mentored our in-house Machinist, Aerospace and Facility Engineers, and our Craft team at one of the most heavily used wind tunnels in the nation. The facility has tested nearly every commercial, military and NASA spacecraft, since the 1950’s.

The facility accommodates about 20 customers per year and undergoes an upgrade / maintenance outage for a number of weeks each year, which creates a multitude of different projects for a Machinist. In addition to projects brought directly to you, the position requires you to be able to

go into the field to identify solutions to problems found during testing / operations. This can sometimes be outdoors, in confined spaces or at heights. There is no “assembly line” of work as each job is unique to the situation.

Your ability to understand the needs of your customers and work in a team atmosphere is essential to your success. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are a must.

All tooling, tools, and machines are company provided.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

Unusual or Special Physical Requirements of Position

Ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs. Ability to assist with the installation, operation, troubleshooting and repair of test models and test hardware systems. Ability to enter confined spaces and ability to move in and around machinery and wind tunnel systems.

Description of Work Environment

Work in an office setting and industrial field environment around compressors, wind tunnels, cooling water systems, machine shops, and lubrication systems. Field work can be a combination of outside and inside depending on the task. May work in proximity to high and low temperatures, rotating equipment, oil, greases, solvents, and high noise areas.

Equipment and Machines Involved in Work Tasks

Ability to operate personal computer systems, telephones, and other general office equipment. Ability to operate inspection, electrical and mechanical, and complex instrumentation equipment.

Criticality of Attendance

Standard work week of 40 hours, 8 hours per day, M – F. We offer some flexibility to work between the hours of 6:00 am – 4:30 pm. Part time work hours during the school year – 20 hrs / week.

Other Essential Functions

Must be able to accurately communicate ideas verbally and in writing. Must be able to obtain a NASA badge and maintain access to the workplace facility (U.S. Citizenship and Valid State ID). Adhere to appropriate safety, quality, and environmental practice, as well as business ethics practices. Perform other duties as required.

The base salary range for this position is $23.00-$24.00 per hour. This range reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Here’s what you’ll need :

1 years of machining experience. Current Machine Shop students are encouraged to apply.

Basic experience programming / operating CNC machines, wire EDM, manual mill, band saws, drill press, grinders, sanders, hand tools, etc.

Ability to work off mechanical drawings, hand sketches or computer-aided-design (CAD) files.

Familiar with working with a variety of materials, from hardened steels to plastics. Cutting, boring, tapping, finishing.

Mechanically inclined with good problem-solving abilities.

Able to follow instructions and work independently to meet critical deadlines and manage workflow through the shop.

You must be a team player that is comfortable working face-to-face with customers, engineers & craft personnel.
